Train to Sorrento
I'll be heading to Rome in a couple months and am planning to take the train to Naples and transfer to the CS (Circumvesuviana) to Sorrento. Having never taken the trains in Europe I wondered about my luggage. Do I check it or take it on the trains with me? Also - if I want to see some of the sites in Naples, are there facilities at the station to store my luggage and is that secure? On the way back to Naples am going to stop at Pompeii. Where can I store my luggage while seeing the sites there? Thanks for any info!

You must take you luggage on board the train with you which is one of the big reasons to pack light. The Circumvesviana platform is several hundred yards from the main Naples station and down several escalators, an easy trip if you've packed light but more difficult if you've packed heavily. There is secure baggage storage in the Napoli Centrale station (it's on the end of the station near the higher numbered tracks near the information office). I'm pretty sure that there isn't any luggage storage at the Circumvesviana station in Pompeii. There's also a regular train station in Pompeii (further from the ruins) and there may be luggage storage there but I'm not sure. I believe that there is a luggage storage room at the entrance to the Pompeii ruins. The information number for the Pompeii ruins is 081 5365154. I'd recommend that you call if you can't find the luggage storage answer elsewhere. Good luck.

The luggage storage in Italy is not a locker so don't be surprised when you go to the area and check it in at a counter and they give you a receipted number for your luggage. We haven't used the luggage storage in Naples, but have in Milan and it was all safe and well kept. Marilyn

.
At the Pompeii site just to the right of the ticket *collecting* booth there is an open unattended room where you can leave your luggage for free. For piece of mind while visiting the site you might want to secure the 2 bags together somehow (bicycle cable lock, small chain dog-collar & small luggage lock, even a heavy ty-wrap). A thief would have to be quick and not attract attention. The ticket collecting booth is inside the site past the ticket selling booth, bookstore and *police* substation. Walking out with 2 attached bulky roll-a-boards would attract attention
and they would just grab someone elses'. Although I've never heard of anyone being robbed from there on any NG/forum.
Took that trip last year. Ditto on packing very light but sometimes easier to say than do. The Naples transfer is a challenge but doable; just need to read signs and walk around and down. Train to Sorrento was packed and standing room only at the time we took it. This is the only time I thought someone was trying to get into my pockets or brain. We took the train back to Pompeii as a day trip from Sorrento. Well worth it, both Sorrento and Pompeii. We didn't explore Naples. Sorrento train station to hotels is a walk with steps; unless you take a taxi.
