I agree as usual with Rex. The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Rail timetable, Table 99 shows trains from Prague Hlavni to Krakow Glowna thus. Both stations have pickpockets who work in gangs of three and crowd you, so you need your rail ticket in a front pocket and all other valuables in a carrier bag deep inside a big piece of baggage. The one way second class Eurocity train fare is about 70 euros, and with a berth in a three-berth sleeper about 100 euros.
Prague at 0430, Ostrava 0903 to 1010, to Krakow at 1302
Prague at 1100, Katowice 1725 to 1742, to Krakow 1902
Prague at 1300, Ostrava 1730 to 1749, Katowice 1925 to 1940, to Krakow at 2101
Prague at 2120 to Krakow at 0533
That is too short a night, so I prefer Prague Hlavni 2120, Warsaw Central 0640 to 0705, Krakow Glowna 0950.

Ben,
Thanks so much for your detailed info. I appreciate it. I'm beginning to think that although I've heard that Krakow is very interesting, we may omit it b/c of the long travel time. Thanks for convincing me that I haven't missed something in my research.

Given the tourism explosion over there, I can't imagine there won't soon be cheap flights between the two. Everyone goes to Prague now - what if you could fly from there to Krakow in two hours? Many people dislike the night trains and don't want to spend 8 hours each way on a train anyway...
