A taxi up to Montreux would most probably cost more than 50 CHF/55 USD.
I only wrote that people who are really not able to walk 500 feet can call a taxi for these 500 feet or up to the railway station if there too, they cannot walk a few hundred feet.

There are trolley buses that also link Lausanne's train station and Vevey and Montreux that maybe would require nearly no steps to 'hop' on - well not sure where they exactly run but they run the length of the lake from at least Lasuanne to Vevey and Montreux.

swandav - probably - it's weird sometimes - I tried to take buses from Interlaken along the north shore of Lake Thun all the way to Thun but found a gap and had to backtrack!
so that is not an option for Lausanne to Montreux or Vevey it seems!
thanks for the info.

Swandav is right. Buses go only from Vevey Mont Pelerin cablecar station to Vevey railway station - La Tour de Peilz - Clarens - Burier - Montreux - Territet cablecar and railway station - Chillon castle - Villeneuve railway station and boat's pier, where they connect with other buses to Roche - Yvorne - Aigle and to Noville (2 miles on footpath to Bouveret Aquapark and Swiss Vapeur Park) - Vouvry - Mies (Lake Tanay).
But there are about 5 trains every hour bewtween Lausanne and Vevey.
Interlaken - Beatus caves - Beatenbucht cablecar station - Oberhofen castle - Thun by bus 21 is easy. Timetables:

thankns for that clarification - I was going from Oberhofen by bus to Interlaken I though but there was a gap where I had to turn around and go back to Thun to catch a train - it must have been late on a Sunday or something but I thought they must go all the way through too!
thanks for update.

There is so much to see and do along the north shore of Lake Thun for those who will be in the area several days and looking for lesser hyped places - like the caves (a boat dock in nearby) and Oberhofen, a sweet lakeside town with a fine fine castle - boats also dock there but buses pick up the slack - like from Oberhofen to Thun if the next boat is too long away - actually this makes a sweet walk that I have done!
