The main problem is if you are renting in a Western nation and driving into Czech Republic or Hungary. The car rental agencies are reluctant to let their cars go to the old east because they may be stolen. We used the train which was nice but found English-speaking people everywhere in Prague and Budapest.

Last Fall we picked up a car in Budapest, drove it to Vienna and Prague (where we dropped it off) without any problem.

Make a reservation through one of the larger agencies in advance and you should be fine.

Two years ago we rented a car In Prague, drove to Vienna and then to Hungary (stops/stays along the way). Language, roads, signs were never a problem. Delightful drive, especially from Vienna to Hungary; mostly follows the Danube. We would never have seen Kutna Hora, Telc, Melk, Koseig, etc., without the car.

Fodors

Dear Ms Nacif,

Since your headline mentions trains I write to say that comfortable (as Linda says) day express trains with restaurant cars leave Prague at 0540 and 0837, and reach Budapest at 1533 and 1542, while the sleeper leaves at 2317 and arrives at 0812.

Prague, Kutna Hora, Telc, Melk, Koseig, and Budapest are all on railway lines, many of them beautiful.

Please write if I can help further. Welcome to Europe

Ben Haines, London
