Train or bus from Marseille Airport to Avignon centre
I will arrive at Marseille Airport and want to explore following options to Avignon downtown.
1. Is there a train from Marseille airport to Avignon train station in Avignon town centre?
2. I read there are no trains at the Marseille airport, i have to board a bus to go to the train station, is this correct? how long is the ride? can I purchase the bus ticket and the train ticket at the airport using a US credit card or Euro cash?
3. Is it easier to take a bus directly from Marseille airport to Avignon towbn centre? how long is the bus ride?
thank you.

1. Yes, there are very frequent trains from Marseille airport to Avignon town center.
2. Yes, you have to take the shuttle bus from Marseille Airport to Vitrolles station (less than 5 minutes). You can purchase the train ticket at the airport and it will cover the shutlle.
Note that the shuttle only picks up passengers 10 minutes before train departure.

Actually, I'm not sure you can buy that ticket with a US CC, that may be the catch. When I was there, I thought there were no clerks, you had to use a machine for those tickets. I am not sure if they take euro coins or not.
This is the info at the airport on that and it says you have to use the machine (borne) for the ticket. The key thing you need to know is if you can use euro coins, not just a CC, or if it will take CCs without chips. I know the machine like that in Lyon airport will take all CCs.

Response to Gretchen:
No, i do not plan to rent a car once I am in Avignon (i cannot drive a stick). we plan to stay there for 3 days and then take a train to Aix for couple more days before heading back to Marseille City.

I think your onward plan is excellent. You should consult the local tourist offices in both cities for tours of regional attractions. I know that Aix has them and presume that Avignon does as well.
