I've searched the web high and low and can't find complete information on train travel from Vienna to Rome. The closest I came was Raileurope.com but they don't seem to show the pair of Vienna to rome. Suggestions?

Well, Doug. Welcome to the crowd that finds Rail Europe to be mainly a seller of passes. The information you seek, except for the cost, is available from several European Rail sites. The information I have came from the Austrian ÖBB site. <BR>The shortest run time between Vienna and <BR>Rome is 13 hours, 20 minutes. <BR>You can leave Vienna South (Wien Südbahnhof) and change in Venice after a long lunch break. The train for Rome leaves Venice at 16:40 and arrives in Rome at 21:00. There are overnight trains, but they take 18 hours or so. <BR>If I read German correctly the train from Venice requires a reservation. <BR>The term reservierungpflicht was used, which I interpet to mean you need a reservation. <BR>There is a no change train, but it takes longer than the one change schedule. <BR>There is no big secret about any of this. The web site I go to usually is <BR>http://www.hafas.de/index_e.html <BR>It has links to four of the national systems. The French site is separate, but it is http://www.sncf.com/indexe.htm <BR>And I think that takes you to the English section. <BR>Unfortunately getting ticket prices is hard because the national sites don't tell you what an international ticket costs. I guess they figure if you have to ask, stay home!!

OOPPSS. Absent minded again. <BR>The train leaves Vienna South at 7:34; arrives in Venice at 15:24. The train to Rome leaves Venice at 16:40 and arrives at 21:00. There is a long layover in Venice.

The German site has an English section and it is usually accurate even for schedules outside of Germany. <BR>I do not know how well it handles Italy, however, other than the major international trains. The usual comments I see on Fodors praise it.

Here's an interesting comment. When I went to the OBB site, I was able to get an English version. However, when I clicked on the request for pricing information the screen flipped into German!
