Train from Rome FCO Airport to Venice
I am not a vetren traveler and will be arriving in Rome in the Early AM and needing to take the train to Venice that day. Flight gets into Rome around 9:00 Eurostar train leaves around 4:00 PM.
I have some questions.
Whats the best way to get from the airport to the train station, train, taxi?
Can I book a train ticket from the airport all the way to Venice or is it a different system?
How far in advance do I need to purchase my train ticket? Do I need to make a reservation? Do the trains fill up? (end of June).
On the way back I will need to spend the night in Rome for an early flight out. Is it better to get a hotel near the airport?
Any advice on all of these things would be greatly appreciated!

Why not take a short connecting flight from Rome to Venezia? It would be very easy, and also probably cheaper in the end. If you can't get a cheap flight right to Venice airport, then take one to Traviso, and take the train to Venice, which takes a very short time, and is very cheap. The train from Rome airport would be very involved and time consuming, and probably more costly in the end. Enjoy your trip (and watch your wallet and purse and valuables, esp if you take the train -- keep it all on your person, under your clothing). I used to live in Venice.

You catch the Davinci Express right in FCO that will take you to Termini Station for about 11 Euros in about 30 minutes. From there, you buy a ticket for Santa Lucia station in Venice. The train will arrive in the heart of Venice in a few hours. Take a nap, write out some postcards, read your guidebook, get something to eat and drink, and you're there.
Exit the station and buy a vaporetto ticket for 24 or 72 hours, however long you're staying in Venice. Figure out which vaporetto you need to take to your hotel and hop on.
I don't think you need to pre book your ticket.
When back in Rome I think it's best to find a hotel near the center for your last night. Walk around, eat a nice dinner, have a gelato, and enjoy Rome in the evening. Make arrangements before hand with RomeCabs to pick you up to take you to the airport.
[email protected] or [email protected] It will cost you about 45 Euros for up to 4 people and their luggage to the airport. VERY dependable and comfortable.

Are you taking a 4PM train on purpose? There are virtually hourly departures from Roma Termini to Venice, though some require a connection in Bologna.
With your schedule, it's probable that you could make a train around noon or soon thereafter, and arrive in Venice around 5PM.
