We visited Munich over the Christmas holidays. One of our day trips was to Salzburg - it was beautiful. We bought a Bayern pass at the Munich train station. It allowed the three of us (up to 5 passengers, I think)to make the trip for a total of $19.42 (I can't remember the DM amount) charged to my Visa. The Bayern pass can only be used at certain times (non-peak), but we found it to meet our needs.

We spent two nights in Salzburg which gave us one full day plus another half day. If you rode in from Munich, I think you could get in a full day of sightseeing and then take an evening train back if you cannot stay over night.
Trains are frequent.
By the time you do the castle on the hill and some of the churches and Mirabell Gardens, you have just about seen the highlights. We did take a guided tour of the Festspielhaus, where the music festival is held. Our guide was good and the tour gave us a chance to see behind the scenes at a major concert and opera facility.
I am, however, going back this year because we missed Hellbrunn and the water squirting fountains.
Just returned from a trip which included two nights in Salzburg and train trip to Munich. No problem getting train tickets at Munich station. As Bob says, there are frequent trains, taking 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Even with two nights I saw only the city, which was terrific, but didn't have time to see the beautiful Salzgammergut (sp?) area outside Salzburg. To save some money sightseeing, you can buy at the Tourist Information office in Mozartplatz a Salzburg Card for 24 hours which will get you into all the museums. With the card, I was able to see the visit the two Mozart buildings and the fortress.
Have a great time, you'll love Salzburg, though I must warn you that it is teeming with tourists, and will only get worse as the summer progresses.

I think that two days would be better than one. We didn't have the time, unfortunately. We also went to Neuschwanstein Castle on a day trip using a Bayern pass (same $19.42 for the trip for 3). Otherwise, we spent our time exploring Munich and having a great time.
