I'm looking to buy 3 train tickets from Brussels to Amsterdam for April 9th but it seems to be that 2nd class is either sold out or not yet available for purchase? Can anyone help me out on this please? I have bought train tickets from Paris to Brussels for the same day for 22 Euro per person. Should I wait a little more to buy the tickets for Amsterdam from Brussels? Thank you!

I am far from expert in rail matters (disclaimer), but I didn't know you could get tickets from Deutsche Bahn for rail trips fully outside Germany ....?

I found the website www.b-europe.com (international website for Belgian railways) has fares on April 9 for EUR29 - those are the non-flex fares, second class, one way. A few days beyond that and the fares don't show up, so I guess it's too early for them.

If Deutsch Bahn can show you the timetable and give you a number to call, then they can get you the ticket. Granted, you might not be able to do it online but they can get you the tickets.

I've had to do this before and it's worked fine.

You of course have tried www.thalys.com and not found any good fares? If you got the 22 euro fares from there and Brussels to Amsterdam were not available then it is unlikely to become available IME Brussels to Amsterdam - same advance purchase time limits - up to 4 months in advance for thalys.com I believe.

I think that IC trains on that route which have a flat fare probably would not cost much more than the cheapest Thalys ticket and you would have complete flexibility to hop any train with an IC ticket you could buy just before the train. So unless savings are significant and you don't care if you take an hour longer and have to change once that solution will not break the bank - in case you can't get a discounted Thalys ticket.

PalenQ- I have tried thalys.com and the cheapest I can find is 87 euro for 3 people which is only 29 euro per person but it seems to be the last train of the day. We were only planning on spending the afternoon in Brussels. Might not have any other choices but that one...

Many folks like Antwerp better than Brussels, a town many find rather dreary - fairly modern big busy city - maybe substitute Antwerp for Brussels if you want to do a Belgian stop if fares can be better?

Belgian railways seems to have 39.20 euro fares for all IC trains on April 9th - have you used it? Again the IC takes about an hour longer - there are no reserved seats and you have to make a simple change (or perhaps two) en route I think.

the 17:52 from Brussels Midi takes 2 h 44 min to Amsterdam Centraal - Thalys does it in 1 h 50 minutes I think - and on this IC routing there is just one simple change of train in Rotterdam - 39 euro fares available on Belgian site. Seems a lot cheaper than cheapest Thalys listed for the date.

that 17:52 indeed has one change, in Rotterdam, where you change to Intercity Direct: that train has a supplement of 2.30 euro on the stretch between rotterdam and schiphol. If you buy a ticket online, the supplement will be included, but if you buy a ticket on the day (same price), make sure the supplement is included then as well. Buying one on the train will cost you 10 euros.

the change in rotterdam is from one side of the platform to the other side of the platform, so an easy one.

that Rotterdam to Schiphol stretch would be the Fyra train, right - over new built tracks that the Thalys and thus the reason I guess for the supplement. I always have a railpass so can I go to the ticket window in Rotterdam or Amsterdam and just pay 2.50 euros or do I have to pay the 10 euros - I thought 10 euros - one reason I have not taken the new line but wish to.

if you buy any ticket at a ticket window, it will cost you 2.50: so your supplement will be 5 euros in fact.

but even if you have to change twice on the IC route to Amsterdam the change in Roosendaal, the first Dutch station - border station then change is similarly a snap - everyone gets off one train and onto another. IC trains are really no problem - just buy the ticket in Brussels at about the same fare as online. No need to book your time in stone like the Thalys - when done trekking around Brussels just hop on the next IC train to Holland.
