The latest news is of 14 dead and 60 injured. Fault has been attributed to the passenger train, which apparently did not respect a red light (the section between Verona and Bologna is single track).

The Interregionale (IR) train departed Verona Porta Nuova at 11:39 bound for Bologna Centrale, and was carrying about 100 passengers, many of them commuters. Foreigners were on board (nationalties not yet disclosed).

This is the worst rail accident in Italy in many years.

According to Italian media, the rail line between Verona and Bologna will be out of commission for a couple of days, while recovery and cleanup efforts continue. Trains will be re-routed via Mantova and Modena. The loss of life in this rail accident is the worst in Italy since 1980.
