Here in Illinois at most standard intersections you can make a right turn on a red light if there is no traffic coming from the left. There is normally a sign sying NO TURN On RED if you can't.<BR>My question is in England can you make a left turn at a red light if there is no traffic coming from the right? Will there be any signs or signals ?<BR>I will not be driving in London but smaller towns in the eastern part of the country.<BR>

You can turn right on a red in NJ but not in the city of NY. <BR> I don't remember ever having our driver turn left on red in London/outer London, this is an interesting question

No, you may not turn left on a red traffic signal in the UK. (only exception is if there is a green arrow)

And there aren't that many trafficc lights anyway...think round abouts

I've wondered before why the UK doesn't adopt this system - it can be really frustrating sitting at red lights waiting to turn left when you can see that it would be perfectly safe to do so. I also seem to recall many years ago on a trip through France that all the traffic lights were turned to red after a certain time at night and you just had to stop and make sure it was clear to cross. Do they still do that?<BR><BR>BTW, roundabouts are more common on the outskirts of towns in the UK, but if you drive through town and city centres, you'll find traffic lights seem to be every few yards. I have to go through 5 sets on an approximate one mile stretch of my journey to work each day.
