I got a ticket last week on my windshield. In Belgium.

And I got a parking ticket in Poland last month. On my windshield.</i>
It would be cheaper to pay the meter and put the receipt on your dash.

Actually not.
I park every week close to the trainstation and know where to park for free but I was later and no parking slot available. Left me with going to the parking of Brussels south station, price is 36 € per day or so.
So I parked in the street for 2 days and got a fine of 25 €.
Poland, I wasn't sure it was forbidden to park there but didn't care, was tired and wanted to be close to my hotel.

>>>I do not recall if I was automatically charged for the tickets through my rental car company back in 2010.<<<
You weren't because the rental company doesn't collect ticket fees. The rental company charges a fee (30-40€) for having to provide your information to the police. The police then turn it over to their collections people and you are mailed a letter to pay your ticket and the amount (they can take a year to get it to you).
