On one of the posts -- you mentioned you had stayed at the Grand Hotel Leveque in rue Cler...we're staying there in September, as the Champ du Mars hotel was booked. We loved that place, and had to take the Leveque as a second choice.
How did you like it? I would love to hear thoughts/comments. Thanks.

Not sure if you're talking to me, but I haven't stayed at the Leveque... stayed at Hotel de Turenne... It should be easy to get reviews from Tripadvisor, and definitely go read the Graffiti Wall on RickSteves.com, for the "Paris" guidebook feedback. Boatloads of RS fans stay at the Leveque...

My wife and I have stayed at the Hotel Champ su Mars and liked them both. I do like the ice machine and friendlier staff at the Leveque. In April I could not get our usual room facing rue Cler an had to settle for a rear facing room on the 3rd floor. While I still prefer one of the front rooms, the rear room was fine and also quieter in the morning. My wife feels that the rooms at the Champs du Mars a bit more charming,ie.wallpaper colors, etc. I am more concerned about cleanliness and bed comfort and both of these hotels are fine in this respect.

Travelnut -- no, there is actually a TracyTravelnut who apparently shares your last name.
Thanks tho. I've read the reviews, and have RS books so I booked them...just wanted to know what real live people's experiences were at the Leveque.
Thanks
Jules

Stayed there a few years ago. Had a room "overlooking" the ventilation shaft. This, in turn, was overlooking the back of the cheese shop on the street. We love cheese, the riper the better, but staying right over the cheese shop left something to be desired, odor-wise. In future, would ask for a room facing the street, rather than the shaft which seemed to mainly ventilate the cheese shop up to us!

Bon Jour, We just returned from 2 weeks in France (Normandy) and stayed at the Leveque 2 nights on each end of our trip. Even though we have been to France before, we left some Paris sights for this trip. The Leveque is very basic but clean and that was fine with us. It is very handy to everything you will need. We have stayed at better hotels but have had to walk much farther to get to the Metro. Rue Cler is a fun street but I certainly would not want to spend a great deal of time there. All the publicity from RS is OK but to be taken in small doses, I think. The room we had was on the back, quiet but with a very small bathroom. The room was 87€, fair for Paris $. Breakfast was 8€. The coffee and breads were great but the canned fruit cocktail left a little to be desired. We wanted to eat and run so rather than do the cafe thing on the street, we just paid the extra money and got breakfast over with so we could start our day. People were very nice. If you use their airport shuttle service, allow lots of extra time, our driver made 4 stops after picking us up. I would stay again solely for the convenience. Everything was fine but not particularly special. Have fun Jules

Have stayed there twice but not in a few years. It is basic but clean, very friendly staff and nice location. Got stuck there in a heat wave and left to find a place with AC, but found it perfectly adequate if a bit cramped, but no more so than most similarly rated hotels in Paris.

The rue Cler is a great place to meet other Americans who are also avid readers of Rick Steeve's over-the-top recommendation of that area. Otherwise it is unremarkable. I am mystified as to why he recommends it; I've not seen it praised elsewhere (not in Fodor's Paris, for example).
