Tour operator for Amalfi coast and Pompeii

My daughter and her girlfriend will be in Italy with us for the first time in April. They would like to see the Amalfi coast and Pompeii as a day trip. Has anyone used a group tour operator for a trip like this? As college students, they really can't afford a private tour, but a bus tour with a group would be great. Thanks for any help!

Hi TTI - The bus tour operators normally offer the Amalfi Coast or Pompeii as separate trips, not combined.

To do both in one day they would have to do it independantly. This is easy enough by public transport.

Where are they starting from?

Steve

Hi Steve James--They will be starting from Rome. Do you know of a tour company that you would recommend? We did a Amalfi/Pompeii tour a few years ago, but it was set up by a travel agent. I'd call her, but I feel a little silly since we've done our own planning since then. Thank you for your help!

Hi T,

www.enjoyrome.com is offering a day at Pompeii and Naples for 110E.

However, it does the usual stop at a factory so that you can buy junk.

I suggest taking the train to Salerno and the
SITA bus to Amalfi.

See Amalfi and possibly Ravello.

Take the SITA bus along the Coast Road to Positano.

Visit Positano.

(The SITA bus stops at the top of the town. You walk down to the sea. You can then take the Orange Bus back up the the SITA bus or a ferry to Sorrento.)

See Sorrento.

Take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompei Scavi.

See Pompei (If there is still time)
(There are licensed guides at Pompei that will collect a group for the tour.)

Take the C to Naples.

Take the train to Rome.

You can also do the trip in reverse.

Hope this helps.

Tour bus from Rome is not an option.

The main Rome tour companies - e.g. VASTOURS, APPIANLINE, CARRANI and GREENLINE - offer Pompeii as a day-trip (€ 100 approx) - but NOT the Amalfi Coast.

It is possible to combine the Amalfi Coast & Pompeii by public transport. They'd need to leave Rome before 7a.m. It would be a long day (12-15 hrs).

They'd need to be selective and just pick one or two stops on the Amalfi Coast - e.g. Positano & Amalfi.
(Ravello would be too time-consuming ...)

Really the only way they can do it is by ferry (- as bus doubles the journey time).

SALERNO-AMALFI takes 35 mins by ferry.
AMALFI-POSITANO takes 20 mins.

With the 06.45 ES train start from Rome they could be in Salerno at 09.16.
The 09.40 ferry gets them to Amalfi for 10.15.

They could spend an hour in Amalfi, an hour in Positano - or 2 hrs in Positano - then head for Pompeii after lunch (- aim to be there before 3p.m).

After visiting Pompeii they could then return to Rome by train via Naples.
Alternatively they could catch the early evening Pompeii-Rome bus (- operator: Marozzi) - depending on day of travel.

Hope this helps ...

Steve
