Some in my travel group of 9 have suggested hiring a tour guide at 300 euros a day...any pros or cons?

If you are considering hiring the guide spend 5-10 minutes with him/her on the phone to get a sense of how knowledgable they are, how well they communicate, etc.

Also, be sure you both understand what constitutes a "day" (beginning/end time) as well as how expenses are handled (meals, other transportation, etc.). Most often the host pays for the guide's meals.

Depends what you want to see and do.
I for one like to visit a place at my own pace.
But the price is extremely high IMHO. Unless it includes the bus, pick up at your hotel etc..
Thanks so much! I thought 300 was high too, but wanted some opinions. Don't you think it is best on your own?

Mag:

I host a Yahoo Provence Group at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/provence

You might want to check out the postings about things Provencal.

Here are two companies that offer tours in Provence at:

http://www.provence-tours.com/gb_tours.htm

http://www.toursofprovence.com/

How are going to get around once you are there? Is yours an older group? What sorts of things do you want to see and do? How long are you going to stay?
Reason I ask is that has some bearing on the advice we can give you.
Regards.
John N.
