If you want a luxury hotel in Venice, it is really worthwhile booking through American Express Platinum or Virtuoso. (You need an AMEX Platinum card that goes for about $400 a year to book through them, but anyone can book through a Virtuoso agent).
Reason: you will get a special negotiated price and, with it, you will get amenities such as free breakfasts, upgrades on arrival if available, and other amenities that differ by property. These come to you at no extra cost as a Virtuoso guest. Feel free to email if you need more information.
There are actually nine Virtuoso hotels in Venice. One very special property is the Gritti Palace. I stayed there and enjoyed a large room overlooking the canal.
