Top 5 Tuscany/Umbria

Vote for your top 5 towns to visit in Tuscany and Umbria. Sorry Florence not included. I need to get a better idea from seasoned pro's for a 4 day schedule in late August. Please vote now.

Not sure if it's technically Tuscany but I'd add Orvieto to the list you've already got here. From those listed, the other 4 I'd pick would be Pienza, Montepulciano, Siena and San Gimingano. I'd try to work in Castellina in Chianti as well.

Technically, Orvieto is in Umbria. And yes, I'd add Orvieto to the list. My bias is for Umbria since that's where we were last year, and I'd definitely include Orvieto, Assisi and maybe Perugia - but you do have to leave some room for Tuscan towns.

Smaller than the others and under-rated IMO:

Scheggino
Trevi
Monte Castello di Vibio
Montechiello
Monteriggioni

Better than compiling our preferences is buying a copy of Top 10 Tuscany, one of the outstanding Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides. It's a great resource/reference book.

Montalcino. Hotel Il Giglio is charming (especially room 1 which has a private terrace overlooking the town and the surrounding countryside). Don't miss Sant Antimo Abbey which is south of the town. We also enjoyed Siena, Orvieto and San Gimignano (except for the midday tourist crush).

In no particular order...

In Umbria:
Montefalco
Assisi
Perugia
Bevagna

In Tuscany:
Siena
Montalcino (w/Sant' Antimo abbey as part of this listing!)
ooops, 6, so sorry!

Finally, but so small doesn't even count as an actual "town"
Montefioralle; just out of Greve in Chianti.

Wow. Great responses. The results (so far) are;

1. Siena
2. Assisi
3. San Gimignano
4. Montepulciano
5. Montalcino/Pienze/Perugia (tie)

(equal 6th Orvieto/Volterra)

This poll has given me great ideas for an itinery. So keep 'em coming and vote for your favourite!

1. Siena, stay the night if you can, it is wonderful when the day trippers leave and the campo is illuminated at night; wander off the main attraction areas into all the wonderful neighborhood (you will see each flag for each neighborhood, etc.)
2. Cortona, small charming, easy to meet the locals
3. Assisi, church alone is beyond worth the trip, but there are smaller sites here that are also interesting. wander your way up the hills for great views
4. Montepulciano, enjoy the wine bars, the views
5. Orvieto
