Noel, <BR> <BR>Welcome to the Fodor's Europe forum. You might reasonably supose that someone from Fodor's answers questions here. Years ago, they did, but now they very rarely respond, and only to the occasional question about the site is working (or not working). <BR> <BR>Individuals answer questions here - - and there are about 43,000 "message threads" stored here, spanning the past five years. Many people have asked about good restaurants in venice, and many dozens of answers have been provided over time. I am going to list here for you some of those answers. <BR> <BR>The first ten days of this month (April 2001), Fodor's introduced something called the "new format", but for technical reasons they have had to take it back down. It offered a better way to direct you to information provided in these old answers. The current ("old") format will probably require that I break this up into multiple "posts". <BR> <BR>All of the following information has come from those "old threads", as it is currently easier to re-post it rather than explain to you how to find it. <BR> <BR> <BR> <BR>

For many people, romantic is a setting with a view. I'm more for a calm place with a quaint decoration, appropriate lighting, etc. <BR> <BR>Now, it's very difficult to sort out a place in Venice that has this romantic atmosphere, good cuisine, and relatively low price, specially if one is considering a fish entree. As you may know, fish is sold by weight and is considerably more expensive than beef. Depending on the fish, one's "buying" it all (you choose, it's weighted and prepared). More often than not, this means that it'll have to be shared by both of you. Of course, Venetian cuisine has many dishes where seafood is a component (pasta, etc.). These are much cheaper than fish. <BR> <BR>I've been to two places that may fit your requirements in the distant past. I have no idea on prices nowadays: <BR> <BR>Poste Vecie (Pescheria di Rialto, San Polo 1608, tel. 041 721822, reservations required, closed Tuesdays). This is one of, if not, the oldest restaurants in Venice, secluded in the fish market (to get there one must go over a small private bridge). Two very charming and intimate dining rooms and a small courtyard. I had a very good "seppie con polenta" and my wife a pasta with squid ink. Both of us also had a shellfish salad. Wine included the price tag at the time was US 50 (which I would estimate at US$ 80 today). <BR> <BR>Ai tre Piedi (Salizzada San Cazian, Cannaregio 5906, tel. 041 5208035, closed Mondays) Some 7 years ago, we were surprised for the very nice ambience, good food and low prices. Dinner for 2 ran about US$ 35 (I would guess that today it would cost US$ 50). <BR> <BR>The next time in Venice, we will experiment the Arcimboldo (Calle dei Furiani, Castello 3219, tel. 041 5286569, closed Tuesdays). Friends that went to Venice last year raved about the place. The setting should be very charming and the ambience intimate and romantic. The Venetian cuisine is supposed to be very good and the price very reasonable (our friends spent Lit 150,000 with a bottle of wine). <BR> <BR>Paulo <BR> <BR>========================== <BR>

Here are my favorites: <BR> <BR>At the high end -- Da Fiore. Reservations a must. The shrimp and porcini risotto was to die for. Its a little hard to find, but ever so worth it. Service was excellent too. The menu was in Italian, but a hostess came over and translated the entire thing for us. <BR> <BR>Less expensive -- Alla Vedova by the Ca D'Oro vaporetto stop. Its very casual. They have an excellent selection of antipasto, and a couple of pasta dishes. Two of us had all the antipasto we could eat, plus 2 plates of shrimp and crab linguine, plus a bottle of prosecco for about $60 American. <BR> <BR>Alla Zattere -- on the Giudecca canal on Dorsudoro (right by the Zattere vaporetto stop). The view is most excellent, and the linguine with clams delicious. Service was very leisurely (which means it was slow, but I was enjoying it so much I didn't mind), price was moderate. <BR> <BR>Pizzeria Bora Bora not far from the Rialto bridge. Very good pizzza, great fresh ingredients. <BR> <BR>We also had one of the only really bad meals of our Italy trip in Venice, eating at our hotel near San Marco. I think taking some care when choosing restaurants in Venice is a good idea. You can pick up the business card for this restaurant (with nice clear picture directions) at Hotel Marconi, which you can't miss - - right on the Grand Canal near Ponte Rialto itself, opposite side from the vaporetto stop. <BR> <BR>Best wishes, <BR> <BR>Rex <BR>

Noel <BR>I am a fan of Da Raffaele which is adjacent to the Do Pozzi hotel, near San Marco. I would consider it "moderately" priced for Venice, 2 1/2 years ago I had a meal there for about 75,000L, could have spent less, depends what and how much you order. The restaurant is adjacent to a small canal and there are outdoor tables in fine weather and you can watch gondolas go by. They also don't frown if you order just an appetizer and pasta, that is,if you want to skip the more expensive meat and fish main dishes. <BR>Ponte delle Ostreghe, 2347, San Marco. phone 041 523 2317
