top 10 European sites to see before you die
Scrolling through old threads, I found a world top 100 (a British survey, so most of the results were far-flung destinations ie outside Europe). Got me thinking. What would be your top 10 sites to see in Europe. Can be places you've already seen or have always dreamed of.
Would be most interesting if you suggested specific sites, museums, eating experiences etc rather than whole cities.
Off you go, I'm still thinking..........

The Matterhorn
David
Fjords of Norway
Capri by moon and starlight
The Caldera at Santorini
Cappodocia, Turkey (preferably by hot air balloon)
A Nazi Concentration Camp

The Pantheon in Rome.
And please don't bypass it like the two couples I recently overheard in the piazza, "Oh, we don't need to go there. There's nothing in there except a big hole in the ceiling."

Rather than sites, I'll go with experiences:
Enjoy a gondola ride in Venice.
A relaxing sunset in (pick your favorite Tuscan/Umbrian hill town here; I'll say San G).
Hiking in the Bernese Oberland.
Early evening drinks at a sidewalk cafe near the Piazza Navonna.
Tapas in Madrid's Plaza Santa Ana.
Standing in awe & wonder at the power and majesty inside (pick your awesome cathedral here; I'll say St. Peter's).
Climbing to the top of the Duomo in Florence.
Drive from Grindelwald to Lugano...and take the scenic route.
Stay up until the small hours, driking and laughing and telling stories and singing songs with your fellow travellers from different lands...just try not to wake up the other guests!

The Acropolis in Athens.
San Francis basilica in Assisi, and Assisi, itself.
The sight of sunset rays over Santa Maria della Salute in Venice, seen from the Accademia Bridge in May. Sunset in Paris, from Pont Neuf in the Fall.

Catacombs in Paris
Walk down the mountan trail that Hannibal came down upon as he entered into Italy
See the sun set on some beach on the west coast of Ireland drinking a pint of Stout
See the sights of London from a river barge this time.
See the sunbathers in March in St Peterburg (my parents went there in 1976, we have film of people sunbathing in 25 degree weather...)
Changing of the guard in Moscow.
so much more....

Hi
I agree with much of what has been mentioned here already...it is amazing to see the Duomo in Milan, it is amazing to see Venice, the palace at Versailles is just incredible and so on. I see that Patrick has already mentioned the fjords of Norway but I would like to be a bit more specific. There is a place called Kjerag near Stavanger on the west coast of Norway. It takes a bit of time to walk to this place but when you get to it you can stand on the very edge and look down on the Lyse fjord 1000 meter below you!! It is an amazing sight and I even if I have been there many times I still get impressed by this view every time I go there I have posted some pictures of Kjerag on my homepage and here is a link: http://www.gardkarlsen.com/kjerag.htm
The pictures can really show how amazing it really is...the only way to experience that is to come here and see for yourself
Regards
Gard
