Tongren Market
Planning a side trip from Frankfurt....and have heard about the antique market at Tongren...just can't find much information on it. Is it in Brussels?...I know it's on Sundays. Also...what is the best way to get from Frankfurt to Brussels...fly, train or drive??
Thanks!!

Tongeren is not in Brussels but about a two hour train ride away. It's the oldest city in Belgium and worth a day trip. You can take a train from Frankfurt or use http://www.whichbudget.com to find a cheap flight to Brussels, where you can catch a train to Tongeren. Hope this helps.

Here's a website that tells about the market.
http://www.tongereninfo.net/enantiekmarkt.htm
We were there about eight months ago and it was wonderful, but make sure you go very early in the morning to see the best selection. By noon, most of the vendors were closing up. I believe it opens at six, so you might want to spend the night before nearby.

And of course, I didn't read the top of the website where it says the hours are 7 am to 3 pm. Even though it's in print, I wouldn't necessarily believe it though. We lived in a military community where many people went to Tongeren and the universal info to come out was GO EARLY!
If you like flea markets, there is a huge one in Homburg (down near Kaiserslautern)on the first Saturday of each month except December. It too starts at about 6 am, but it tends to run a little later than Tongeren. The items for sale are more eclectic, ranging from clothing to coins, paintings, tableware and antiques. In January I bought a wonderful antique wall clock for 40 euros there.
Hope this helps, and have fun!

Found this on http://www.bahn.de: there's plenty of train connections. The fastest and easiest would be to take either the 2pm or 6pm train in Frankfurt straight to Liege and change there to a local train to Tongeren. Takes 3h52. I'd advise as well to stay in Tongeren the night before if you want to enjoy the market.

Thanks so much for the great info on the Tongren Market. I did hear about it from a friend who is stationed at Ramstein AB. We won't be there the first Saturday of the Month...had heard about the one in Homberg. Will take advise and arrive early to get the best deals.
Thanks too for all the train info. I think we'll either do that or rent a car and drive.
Keep the great info coming....I'll keep checking back.
