We drove extensively in France in August/September 2009. American cc not accepted (tried Visa, MC, AMEX) at toll booths or selfserve gas stations. Be prepared and carry lots of coins.

Klondike, we are staying in Collioure for a week.

I presume the Spanish toll system is similar for the trip to Figueres?

From Collioure to Figueres you'll have a unmanned toll in Le Boulou (France) for the French leg of the motorway (less than €1), one in La Junquera a few miles after the border where you'll take your tickey. You'll pay when you exit in Figueres (tip : take the first exit - there are 2). This toll is manned. Considering the short distance, it would be pointless to pay by card.

Since you'll be in Collioure you could come back via the coast road (Figueres, Port-Bou, Cerbère, Banyuls, Port-Vendres) which is very scenic but winding.

The Spanish autopista from the French border to Barcelona was the only place in Europe where my card was double-charged by the automatic toll booth. However, the charge was corrected within one week after I notified my bank with all of the details on the paper receipt.

As mentioned above, in France, autoroute charges (by the same autoroute operator) are grouped together per week and do not appear individually on your credit card statement.

Pvoyageuse thanks for the advice, thats pretty much the route I was planning. Is Le Perthus worth a brief stop ?

Also how is the parking at the Dali Museum ?

"Is Le Perthus worth a brief stop ?"

No, definitely not ; touristy, tacky and expensive compared to Figueres.

"Also how is the parking at the Dali Museum ?"
Never tried it, I always park in little side streets off the Ramblas. There are also paying parking lots.
Avoid going on a Thursday, it is market day and always very crowded.

Lots of restaurants on the coast - from the good to the bad -
Rosas has the largest off-season choice.

5 km from Figueres and 5 km from Castello d'Empuries on the old road to Rosas, La Cupula in Vila Sacra is an excellent (and expensive) restaurant.

In Figueres, El Gallo Rojo used to be good, but I haven't been in a while. More expensive : the restaurant of Hotel President on your left just before entering the town.

Pvoyageuse sorry to be a pest, but what is the drive from Collioure like ? Is it a worthwhile day trip? We want to return sometime in winter and do some skiing so I thought a spring reconoitre was on the cards ?

Info on La Cupula :

We had the menu degustacion. Expensive and delicious.

The drive from Collioure to Figueres via the coast road?
It is very winding but beautiful and very doable (less than 20 km). It would be a pity not to go. If you have time (???) visit the Abbey of San Pere de Rodes near Figueres, a breathtaking view over the coast.
It is a good idea to come back via the motorway - less tiring after a very full day. Exit at Le Boulou and take the road to Argeles, then turn right without entering the town to get to Collioure
Collioure is not the best base for skiing. You have to drive through Perpignan to get to all local ski resorts and it adds 30 km to the drive.
Also : a late lunch in France means an early lunch in Spain. You can show up in a resturant at 3 pm and be on Spanish time

I meant the drive to Andorra !!! (damn these fingers !)
I was working on Spanish lunchtime !!
Do you have any personal favourite restaurants in the area north west of Perpignan? Somewhere nice for lunch on another day trip from Collioure.

"I meant the drive to Andorra !!!"

It depends on weather conditions. In winter the Puymorens Pass is sometimes closed to traffic and snow equipment for your car is compulsory.

North-West of Perpignan is a wide area
Which places do you have in mind?
