Tired of getting lost in Venice? Here's 1 solution
Went to Venice in '05 & got lost all the time! Went to Venice in '06 (1 week) & NEVER got lost! Have seen many posts about people getting lost & asking how to get around Venice. So, thought I would post this info in case it helps anyone, like it helped me.
Venice map by "freytag & berndt"; just bought another one at Borders Book Store for our Nov.'07 trip (the '06 copy was too used to keep!). It also has the vaporetto routes & #'s. It can also be ordered online, but I don't have that info & can't find it on the map.
On the map, before leaving home, I highlited our hotel, the major sites we wanted to see, & location points (St. Marks, Accademia Bridge, Rialto, etc.). I also highlited a couple of Rick Steves' walking tours.
It's very large & has a cardboard cover. I cut off the cover & cut the map into districts. After cutting off each section, I numbered the 4 edges to match the adjoining edges so I could follow my path from one piece to another.
It worked so well, I honestly say, we NEVER got lost, honestly! In addition to the map with its alterations, I always take a small pocket (good one that works) compass on all of our travels. Used it many times to get our direction after we had just wandered around - which we did a lot. Another needed tool is either a small pocket magnifying glass or good eyes or reading glasses! The info on the map is small because all the little calles & everything else is on it!
Hope this helps & enjoy Venice, Julie

But getting lost in Venice is part of the romance of the place!
We navigate Venice by landmark: Turn left after Dolce & Gabbana. Cross the bridge after Bulgari. If you get to Gucci, you've gone too far!

lol, Jean, I understand what you mean. However, we wanted to spend as much time as possible at the places we so enjoyed. For instance, when we went to Burano/Murano/Cimitero (sp), we didn't want to lose our precious time there by just wandering around trying to find the Fond. Nove.
I'm glad we did leave time for leisurely strolling, but we did need to maximize our time since we had soooo many places we wanted to see & experience. Didn't think we would get back this year. So glad we are. Now we can see some of the places we missed!
Venice is so great!
