"pretty as the Cotswolds but without the tourist buses"

I probably drive round the Cotswolds more than anyone else on these pages. I can count on the fingers of one foot how many "tourist buses" I see.

True, the double-deckers that take us shopping, or give The Flannerpooch 2013 ha glimpse of the outside world, do sometimes startle friends unused to finding bus passengers looking into our guest bedroom from the upper deck. But they've yet to carry their first tourist.

The crowdedness of the Cotswolds is simply a myth invented by people living in less fortunate parts of the world to console themselves for their deprivation.

Another vote for Suffolk, plus I'd add Cambridge for a walking town.

I've had a taste of the places you are considering--Cotswolds, Suffolk, Kent. They all seem to fit the bill and are calling me back.

Miss Prism, your pictures were lovely. Not to hijack the thread, but what is a bell cage?

Thanks for all the tips everybody, it is appreciated!

Apart from the great recommendations here, we are now also looking into central Wales, mainly because of the nature and landscapes. Any thoughts?

....Not to hijack the thread, but what is a bell cage?...

The bells in that church were too heavy for the tower, so they are in a cage in the churchyard. I think that ringing them is "different"

Watch out - as all our internet activity is logged by the spooks, anyone typing Snowd*n is likely to hear a knock at their door in the early hours!!

not sure what you mean by central Wales. the "Marches" border area between England and Wales is very lovely, from Monmouth, the Malvern Hills, through, Shropshire, to Ludlow, and Shrewsbury - all very interesting and attractive. It's a bit further of course, but definitely far fewer people.

further west it gets less populated and more hilly.
