Nonconformist, please tell you traveling friends there's nothing to fear in Sicily from the Mafia. Automobile and motorcycle drivers, however, are another thing.....

PugTraveler, in terms of public transport, the main bus and train stations of Assisi, Deruta, Orvieto and Perugia are all downhill from the historic district. Although we used funicular and public escalators in Orvieto and Perugia, respectively. Anyone with walking problems needs to be aware and have taxi money on hand! Orvieto was pretty level once one reached the top.

What's involved in getting from the historic area of Perugia, which I assume is where we'll want to stay, and the train, bus and private train stations?

If getting to these places is a hassle we might have to reconsider using Perugia as a base.

We arrived by train from Rome and my notes say it was an 11-euro taxi ride zigging and zagging to the edge of Corso Vannucci. It was a pedestrian area and our Hotel Locanda della Posta was in sight of the drop-off point. Once there, we found it was a major bus (with handy ticket stand) and taxi area. Also there was a public escalator to the lower part of the city with parking and bus terminal.

Except for leaving (we almost always taxi when we have luggage), we used the town bus to get back to the train station for day trip to Arezzo. We used the public escalator to get to the bus terminal for trips to Todi, Trasimeno, Deruta and Gubbio. Oh, we did take a taxi to the very top as we got lost and made a huge circle trying to get there on foot!

I did a TR if you are interested. Just click my name and you'll find it toward the end of other TRs.
