time on this forum? Which one?

Ok I see it is almost 5pm at the time I post this. It is 10.03am where I am on the next day. So where is it 5pm - Eastern US?? I'm confused. I am counting the hours behind certain countries are (that's right you are all behind us mwhahahaha) but with day light savings it all gets so confusing.

Please tell me where in the world the fodors clock is right?

It's the current eastern time, which I guess is Daylight Savings Time. We switch back to Standard Time as of 2am on Oct. 31.

This time time is correct for NYC, for example.

Where're you located? Australia, maybe?

I'm in NZ. I think there is just a couple of pacific islands on the same time as us (and maybe Siberia).

So does eastern time go the whole way down the coast including Canada. What happens to the middle of the US do they pick a time zone east or west or get their own one!

I know this may sound silly but I have never been to the states and my country is so not big enough for any more than one time zone. The ocean dictates the others. And it is one of your compatriots that asked me if we keep pengiuns as pets in NZ.

So just humour me.

In Indiana I'm an hour behind NYC. We don't use that crazy, newfangled daylight savings stuff here. That extra hour of sunlight would burn the corn for gosh sake. Not to mention throw the cows into a tizzy with their milking routine.

Thankfully in a couple of days those wild Eastern Daylight Savings Time miscreants will come to their senses, end their summer madness and return to Indiana time.

Next thing you know people will be driving down the road at 60mph with their windows down. Every sane person knows that over 60mph the wind from an open car window will suck the air right out of your lungs and asphyxiate you.

I bet people in Molvania don't use Daylight Savings Time or drive over 60mph with their windows down!

Here's a time zone map.

http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/world_tzones.html

As you can see, the 48 contiguous US States comprise 4 time zones. Alaska and Hawaii are so far west they fit into their own. A majority of Canada also fits into the same 4 time zones as the continental US, but extends beyond them to the east and west.

I think that there'll be others more qualified to answer your questions re time zones. But there used to be a time when I didn't have to leave for work early in the morning.

On one of those occasions, I watched a morning show that featured a segment on a town somewhere in the US (Michigan, was it?) that has two time zones. Or maybe there were two towns right to next each other with two different time zones. So you would cross a "border" and you could gain or lose an hour. That was interesting.

indy travel that so funny.

Having said that day light savings has just started here (coming into summer) and there is always backlash about it especially to do with the farmers and their milking times!

Although I do wonder what a cow in a tizzy looks like...

wilees, here in California, in the Pacific time zone, we're three hours behind the East Coast of the US and three hours closer to your time.

Don't leave us hanging, do you keep penguins as pets?

(I'm kidding!!!)

Indy, sooo funny!

What always freaks me out is Newfoundland Daylight Time in Canada.

It is 90 minutes off Eastern Daylight Time.

When it's 5:30pm in NYC it's 7:00pm in St Johns, Newfoundland. Weird.

That's because they don't use that "old fashioned" Indiana time I guess.

right so i've been looking at those websites.

so if you are a morning person you should live on the eastern side of a time zone and if you are an evening person live on the western (or is that the other way around??) lol

I like day light savings time. I live in Texas (Central standard) and like having long evenings while it is still light. I also have trouble finding the right time to talk to my daughter in England. By the time I get home from work she is already asleep.

wilees, thanks for asking the question.

Fears were also expressed when DST was introduced in Australia - not only would it befuddle the cows and reduce dairy output, it would accelerate the fading of curtains. One old farmer predicted dire consequences if we "interfered with God's time". There's been no reported increase in lightning strikes yet, though.

Quite a few years ago when I was living in California they tried an experiment to keep daylight savings time all year. The decided not to do that because it stayed dark so long in the morning that they were afraid for kids going to school at like 7:30 or so...they were walking to school or the bus stop and they didn't feel if was safe for them in the dark...so they went back to standard time and daylight savings time. I can't wait for Sunday..I can sleep an extra hour and not feel guilty that I'm not getting up and getting all the stuff done that I should be doing. I like the winter, the having a fire, kind of cocooning, but after new years it's.."is it spring yet?"

summersquash, I'm in CA (Pacific time) and I sympathize with your problem talking to England. We are even one hour earlier, and since I'm a nightowl, I found the best time for me was about midnight. It would be 8 am in England. The other possibility was 10 am in CA which would be 6pm in England.

Had lots of business calls where one party had already had their wine with dinner or an evening cocktail, while the other was working on morning coffee.

Yes. The sun comes up and goes down earlier on the Eastern side. For example, sunrise in Balto on Nov 3 will be at 6:36, in Atlanta 6:58.
