We are going to Italy in september and I am trying to figure out if it is necessary to book tickets in advance for places like the Ufizzi. from what I have read it seems so. Will that be neccessary at the Louvre or the Venice Biennal too?

September is a very busy month in many cities. I can't speak for the Ufizzi etc but for the Louvre, you don't really every need to book in advance if you don't want to IMO. There was a very recent thread on this, I just read it yesterday or so, so you could see what people's thought are on that.

I don't book in advance for the Louvre even in summer, it isn't like there are lines blocks long or anything to get in there. YOu may have a short wait, but it's not that much. They have plenty of openings and ways to get tickets quickly that things move pretty well. It's also quicker if you go late afternoon, and they are open late at least one night, if you want.

Uffizi and Academia Museum Reservations
The easiest and cheapest way is to call Florence 1016868 (dial around number), 011 (U.S. international access code) 39 (Italy's country code) then 055-294-883 8:30-18:30 M-F and 8:30-12:00 Sat. Florence time. There is a long listing of press 1 for this and 2 for that--press 4 for bookings. You will get an English speaking operator and in 2-3 minutes YOU CAN RESERVE FOR BOTH. This is through the reservation service at the Uffizi and costs beyond the normal entry fee only about 3 euro for the service. This is MUCH cheaper than the commercial booking services.

You will not be charged for the reservations unless you use them.

thanks for your advice one and all. From my readings that is the impression I got as well - that reserving at the Ufizzi was recommended but not necessary at the Louvre. guess I had better get on the phone to florence!

We had no problem getting into the Louvre, we went to the Friday evening session which is cheaper and less people. On the other hand, strongly recommend reservations for Ufizzi and Accademia. We were there in October and the queues will still very long.
