Three destinations in Portugal?

If you could choose three destinations in Portugal what would they be?

We're planning for 2006 and Portugal sounds very intriguing. For a two week trip 2 or 3 destinations is my maximum. Any more than that and it feels like you are spending more time travelling than being there.

We aren't into beautiful sandy beaches. Those are great, but not what I go to Europe for. We prefer the historical sites, and quaint small towns.

Thanks in advance, the turnip.

That's a tough one.

My favorite places in Portugal were Tomar and Marvao.

Are you thinking of 2 or 3 places as a base from which to tour other places or just simply, 2 or 3 places?

Sintra is absolutely lovely, and certainly fits the historic/quaint criteria. I based there for two weeks (with a 3 day timeout for Madeira) and loved it; I went to Cabo da Roco, Obidos, Cascais and Estoril, and of course Lisbon quite easily from there.
