sognatrice, I haven't read the entire copyright policy, but I'd be a bit surprised if what you quoted referred to anything other than Fodor's own material. Remember, this website is a lot more extensive than just the talk forums. If I post a trip report here, I don't see that I've given up my copyright to that material.

I think that Marilyn maybe right because I posted my trip reports through the years on three travel sites that I like. And no one has said anything knowing I did?

Not to belabor the point too much, but point #1 quoted above defines the &quot;web site&quot; as consisting of &quot;information, services, and content <i>provided by the Online Service Provider</i>&quot; (emphasis mine). We are &quot;subscribers,&quot; not the &quot;Online Service Provider,&quot; so the material we provide would not technically be considered a part of the &quot;web site.&quot;

I hope marilyn's right. It's the same to me, one way or another. Probably not a big deal, unless you are talking about selling a book or movie rights to content that already exists online.
I work for a publishing copy as large as Random House, and Internet copyright law is a very big issue in our offices!

I think the internet is a huge issue for any company, large or small, that deals with any sort of intellectual property. Even for a large company, it's almost impossible to enforce because it's so difficult to even know who is using your material without permission or license.

Barb - Loved it!

It reminds me of my own diva trip 18 years ago, a trip w/ 5 California women to New York city. My dear friend P and I were there to eat great food and see great art. The other 3 were there to shop and go to plays. However, the 3 got lost IN the hotel twice and were hopeless on the streets and in the subway. So for 2 weeks they followed us around mumbling complaints about our food/art itinerary! The last day they ventured forth to see the World Trade Center. P and I took them to their subway stop, told them to go up the stairs, turn left, and voila - they couldn't miss it.

Well, miss it they did... But P and I had a great time on our own that day. And the funny thing is I no longer remember the names of the 3 shoppers, although I had plenty to download about at the time. All I remember now is how funny it was that they couldn't find the WTC.

It's a good thing that they weren't looking for a small place like Rockefeller Center.

Barb
this may turn out to be the most enduring travel report ever. Congratulatinos, and let us know when the movie is cast.

I can think of one way you could have had worse travel companions--just think if some of the posters here had gone with you!

Yeah, just because I think this &quot;story&quot; from Barb is mean, I'd make a terrible traveling companion. Nice comment, Elaine.

I don't think Barb's posting is mean at all. I think she's doing a justice to people who may be thinking of traveling with a lot of people. They should think twice about it. Bravo Barb!!!!

As for the criticizim about the flirtation with the younger Italian man......Get real people. Do you really think she was thinking of marrying him and living happily ever after? It's fun to flirt and it's great for the ego. We &quot;well over 25&quot; group can have a little fun, can't we?

OK about this movie thing... Diane Keaton and Bette Midler, I'm sorry to say this are too old! They are wonderful actresses but by the time Barb gets this to the screen (hehehe) they will be in their 60's..Bette is 60.
How about actresses born in late 50's or early 60's - like Frances McDormand (1957) oe even Demi Moore (1962). We already know how SHE feels about younger men!

Sognatrice! I wondered what had happened to you. I missed you when you &quot;disappeared,&quot; since we seemed to be interested in some of the same things (Italy-related, or language questions, I think)and you often had a thoughtful approach to topics. It's too confusing to follow the history of this controversy that I was never aware of, but I'm just saying &quot;hello.&quot;

Ok, I admit it. I have a problem. I HATE it when people don't understand what I am trying to say and I hate it even more when I see that happening to others. I KNOW, it is none of my business, but I am compelled to step in.

I read this:

Author: sognatrice1
Date: 11/05/2005, 06:48 pm
Anniebbb:
This is a forum, which would seem to invite people to give their opinions, both sides of the coin. I think what you're describing is better known as a &quot;Soapbox&quot;.

I live in a place where people are allowed and even encouraged to have opinions, and to engage in healthy debate. Of course, I realize it may not be that way where you live.
So when someone posts, others give opinions, all kinds. Not a big deal. I'm sure Barb can take it.

Anniebbb, was NOT talking about the people who were saying she was mean etc. She was talking about the people who said something like, &quot;That reminds me of the time I went with a group of friends...&quot;

She meant that their stories were taking away from Barb.

I am not saying if I agree or not, I just wanted you to understand what she was saying.

sognatrice1; First of all, I need to clear up a few things you have so kindly pointed out - the Divas did not want to split the check - that would have been far too easy and what I had suggested from the start - they wanted to figure out each and every dish down to the penny of what they each should pay and if you think most Italian restaurants will do separate checks for six women - you obviously haven't asked many restaurants to do this for you. Secondly, I never said they were helpless, did I? And thirdly,yes, I was once a newbie traveller, but I can tell you that I was well prepared before I left home, armed with information, curiosity and did it with the help of lots of hours of research on here and in books and without the help of someone offering to go with me, making arrangements for me ,etc.

But what I’d really like to know is, if this thread is so obviously distasteful to you, why in the world would you go to all the trouble to delete out all the responses, print out my report in it's entirety to analyze it and then proceed to tear it apart and give me your opinionated and unasked for comments. That’s almost scary. I usually try to ignore people like you, but I have to wonder why you feel so compelled to try to tell me why I did the things I did, how I felt, or how the Divas should have felt. You don’t know me, so don’t presume to think you do. I guess I have to ask myself why are you so angry and why would you even care. If I start reading a thread that is annoying or uninteresting to me, I stop and go on to something else. If I happen to disagree with something someone has said,(not a factual point), I just go on to something else. If I have something constructive to add or comment on, I will. If not, I go on to something else.

This report was meant to show the possible dangers of traveling with other people (and it sounds like this has happened to many others) and I tried to do it with a little humor thrown in.

The message this might be sending to a lot of people thinking about doing a report is, if it’s not all sweetness and light, just sticking to the facts of a trip, be careful because you could get blasted with a lot of really angry and hurtful comments by people with obvious chips on their shoulder who have some kind of an agenda that has nothing to do with travel and with what Fodors is all about.

The anti-Barb posts have, indeed, gotten truly weird -- and the whole trip into intellectual property laws and copyright was just... <i>weird</i>!

I didn't want to waste a huge amount of time doing it, but I did click on &quot;sognatrice1&quot;'s name and nothing came up! Not even this thread. I'm sure part of it is sluggishness on the part of the search function, but it suggests either that she is someone else's doppelganger or that she registered for the sole purpose of going after Barb. Again, <i>weird</i>.

Is Barb mean? Well, we wouldn't have enjoyed parts of this nearly so much if we didn't relate to the familiarity of being completely exasperated by someone and wanting to be a little &quot;naughty&quot; or &quot;wicked&quot; (in the gentle sense New Englanders use it, not the hellfire way that some might use it) in order to vent. It's funny BECAUSE it's not endlessly patient, AND it's funny because we know that the behavior of some of Barb's companions was downright painful and mean to HER -- and rather than haul off and let them have it, she waited and blew off a little steam with us.

All I can think is that those who think she was mean are those who related entirely to the most exasperating of her companions and don't like the image in the mirror.

Once again, Barb, THANKS, and don't let 'em peck you to death over any aspect of this. (I mean, copyright, for pity's sake!)
