things to do in and around nice

My husband and I will be in Nice for a week in June. An Uncle is renting a chateau and invited us to visit. He is elderly and can't get around much so we don't want to desert him for hours and hours and hours, but we would like to see things. Any suggestions on where in and around Nice we should visit that would be day visits? We enjoy nature, wine and shopping. What are the best Museums to visit? What is the best english web site that would provide the information we are looking for? Sorry I'm asking alot! Just don't know a thing about the area.

Leslie,

Two of our favorite museums are the Matisse Chapel in Vence and the wonderful Meaght Foundation, an indoor/outdoor of modern art.

The two villages are next to each other and about half an hor west of Nice by car.

Check on opening times, particularly for the Matisse Chapel--it used to be open on just Tuesdays and Thursdays for limited hours.

Nearer to Nice is the estate of Ephruzzi Rothschild on St. Jean Cap Ferrat; and the Mykrollos ancient Greece restoration, a mansion in Villefranche (I believe).

I stayed in Nice for a week 2 years ago. It was fantastic! One day we took the train to Monaco and spent the day there- how beautiful! The train is only 20 mins each way. There is of course the castle, Monte Carlo, the amazing yacht club, etc. but there were also many wonderful cafes and shops to poke around it.

Another day we took the train to Cannes - also 20 mins. Again this was a great place to shop and eat, we also spent quite a bit of time on the beach here as it was sand and the beaches in Nice are large flat rocks.

You might want to do a Google search under French Riviera and see what sights seem most appealing to you.

I know that you will have a great time!

Some sights you might enjoy are:

- Maeght Foundation near St. Paul de Vence is an amazing modern art museum
- Eze is a really charming, very old hilltop village close to Monte Carlo . . . nice for shopping
- Antibes is a lively, pretty little waterfront town with good shopping and restaurants

Unless you're REALLY interested in how perfume is made, DON'T go to Grasse--I can't figure out why so many people recommended it

Enjoy, it's a wonderful part of the world
