Some of us find this forum entertaining (gasp) even if we aren't planning a trip or doing serious research.

I think the Goofy ad is the biggest bother on this board.

What bothers me most is that i feel like I can't adequately thank people for taking the time to answer my many questions.

I wish there were an easy way for me to send little momentos to the people who have helped me -- a leather bookmark from Florence, a small b&w photo of women workers in a 19th century textile mill from the Museum of London's photo archives, whatever, just little things. But it feels wierd to post or email and say, "Hey, send me your personal address and I'm going to send you a little something and I promise it won't be anything creepy".

Ben Haines, Kate, FlannerUK, Ira, Robespierre, laclaire, Robert 2533 -- there are just too many people to mention who have been so generous with their time and info.

I think we may have hurt dekoder's feelings when no one agreed w/ him. He hasn't been back on the forum since posting this.

Fishee- Now I know why I like helping you out!

You are headed to BCN soon. I am too (end of June). I can't wait to hear your trip report and I promise to send one of my own. It will be a doozy, though, as this is for the long haul.

Claire

Ha! janis, we "bothered" him.
I hope he did not post back because he went on his trip, helped with the advice he got here. It would be nice if he reported back though, that is what bothers me, when no one tells us how the trip went!!
But, I get over it

Hi laclaire -- how exciting that you're moving to BCN, for how long this time?

Since the areas of Spain I'm visitng are familiar stomping grounds for you, I'm not going to send you a bar of black soap... But I'll be in Istanbul in July and I'm going to keep my eye out for a little trinket for you and Robert2533. Don't expect a turkish rug in the mail though...

This is, indeed, the long haul. Initially, I have papers for a year, with the option to renew my contract and get 5 year papers. As my mother said "I think this one might stick."

I wish we were getting to plan a night out for drinks, but alas. . . it is all in the timing. However, you will see some amazing stuff and I love how fresh eyes see my old and dear loves.

Istambul in August?. . . drink Apple Tea! I hope to visit there very soon. It is my next stop after a return to Morocco.

Bookchick: as much as I agree with your post in general, I really can't disagree with you more on the following:

"...since God was a young boy in short pants"

God was a little girl with cute curls standing on tippy toe gazing into a flower a la Renoir/Monet/Degas.

dekoder: to help you relax, here's a link to some absolutely awesome photos of Paris that will take your breathe away. I came across this link courtesy of another poster on this board on another thread:

Enjoy!

Oh, fishee, you must be a very thoughtful person! I, too, have appreciated the valuable info gained from people on this board, but admit that I haven't had generous impulses like yours.

What I have tried to do is share any knowledge I have, since others have shared their expertise so patiently with me. It is irksome, though, to spend a good deal of time responding to someone's question, even going back into my files for info, and then never to get any sort of response at all. It's worse, though, to see a real expert offer very good info in response to a question and get no acknowledgement.

But here's a disclaimer: I was once guilty of this myself. In '05, in my very first post on this board, I sought info about a planned trip. The first response was a playful one, but I was so green about message boards that I misinterpreted it and thought, "Oh, this person is being deliberately unkind. I just won't respond to him."

Now the punchline: The playful poster, whom I mistook for a churl, was...Ira! Ira, possibly the most gentlemanly poster on this board! I felt sheepish on realizing my mistake.

And, dekoder, I feel a little sheepish in making a "useless" reply to a post in which you say that you're bothered by useless replies. But I think the social aspect of this board is not a trivial one.

for the record, I don't actually end up buying anything for people, so I'm really just being a shameless brown-noser.

Actually, I did once send a hand painted leather bookmark to lemex (from FT forum) who posted a $3/night hotel error rate in Milan. My friend and I ended up in this wonderful suite for 4 nights for a total of $13.38 in a great 3* hotel. The bookmark was a reference to "bookmarking" his site -- freetraveling.com which posts error rates. My friend and I would have never been able take this trip together, otherwise, and we continued on to Florence for a few days afterwards, flying free with award tickets. I felt downright stingy sending such a small gesture after his post enabled me to take such an unexpected trip to Italy.

Not only I have benefited several times, but also I do make point to share different thoughts and opinions. Links given are the best one can get from some one else’s experience. I also save some wonderful experiences for future travel. I always have choice to read or not to read………but never to get irritated with experienced participants or new comers and to say so from naïve questioners. That’s why Fodor’s travel forum is one of the best in the business.

Hi

I think this forum is pretty good compared to other forums. There are some forums where every question just gets answered with a Yes or a No and in the end the discussion ends with "You are stupid" or something like that. Just look at the Craiglist travel forum on http://forums.newyork.craigslist.org/?forumID=42

The discussions here have a tendency to go off topic but it is not a problem with a few jokes in a thread as long as the original poster gets an answer to his or her question. I also remind people from time to time that searching is a good option but most of the time people (including myself) feel that their question is so specific that they want to post a seperate thread instead of reading older threads. But this forum has been of help to me in the past.

I think that it is important that people behave in here...remember that even if you don't see the persson in front of you there are individuals behind all the posts here and there is no need to call people names etc.

Regards
Gard

Hmmmmmmmm,

>1. When someone posts a question and people send links back.

See
http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...p;tid=34799310

>2. When someone posts a question, and 3 or 4 shotgun "try the search bar" replies come back.

If you enter "pet peeves" in the "search this forum" box you will find several threads on this same subject.

>Also troubling is those who reply as though they are authoritative,..

This should have been numbered, as it is different from its antecedent in the same paragraph.

Make it 2A

>3. Posts/replies that have no value at all.

Some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

I hope you feel better this morning, D.

I frequently post weblinks as my primary response, because that's the answer "from the horse's mouth", with much greater authority than I would ever claim for myself or expect from even the most recent or seasoned traveller on these boards.

I also joke around a bit, but I do try to keep it reasonably relevant.
