Thessaloniki or Athens?
I have an opportunity to spend about 3 days in Greece between a trip to Bulgaria and Turkey in mid-Oct. I have never been Greece. I can either take car to Thessaloniki or a flight to Athens. I have read some good things about Thessaloniki and like the idea of the monasteries in Meteora. Also, I not big city person and have read mixed reviews about Athens.
Any thoughts from the Greece experts out there would be appreciated.
Thanks so much as always!

I enjoyed both cities very much, and they are extremely different! If your priorities include classic Greek ruins, you might aim for Athens. If your priorities are to lean more to Roman ruins and Greek Orthodox architecture and ornamentation, aiming for Thessaloniki might make more sense.
If you haven't already seen it, you might find some useful information in my trip report:
With Gratitude for a Glorious Solo Month in Greece
The section specifically on Thessaloniki begins with post # 174; Athens with post # 181.

@kja I was just reading your report when I saw your post come in. Thanks for responding. I really love to find another Fodorite that likes to pack in the sights. I too love a very full itinerary. I also read your Turkey report. Thanks for spending so much time detailing your travels.
