X, that's rude.

Phil, my recommendations for Sorrento is the Aminta, www.aminta.it

For Florence try the Casci but it's getting so much press on here it may be hard to get a room. But the location is very good.

Venice: Locanda Leon Bianco has lovely, big rooms on the Grand Canal, excellent proprietors, and breakfast served in you room. The price was 280,000 lire per room per night last month. It's a popular choice, so book soon. It has its own website.

My husband & I really liked Hotel Hermitage in Florence. The location is fantastic (view of the Arno). It is small and charming.

You really do owe it to yourself to do a little window shopping. the www,venere.com is a great place to orient yourself - - and even book your eventual choices, if you wish.

Make sure to check out Fodors Rants'n'Raves as well.

Choices I can comfortably recommend - - not all of these might entirely in your desired budget range:

Menaggio (LAKE Como - - not the city of Como) - - Grand Hotel Victoria

Venice - - Bonvecchiati

Assisi - - Fontebella or Umbra

Rome - - Cesari or del Senato

Best wishes,

Rex
well, I returned yesterday from Rome, and stayed at ARTEMIDE HOTEL ****, and it was very quiet, and with a reasonable location, near Reppublica subway station, and to get, by subway to Spagna or via Veneto is less than 10 minutes, the only problem, is that there are no good restaurants near, but if you´re arriving by train, Termini station is 10 minutes walking.
Last year I went to Florence, and stayed at HOTEL CROCE DI MALTA ***, and the location is also good, all major locations are easy to reach walking, and there are good restaurants near, but pay attention to this tip : The bigger the city, the more important is to find a location near transport facilities.
Do yourself a favor !!! HAVE FUN !!
