Trains leave at least hourly Milan to Rome - build in more than 18 minutes and have a breakfast in the station.

B R A V O ! ! !

Great idea, Pal. The Milan station is not the best posted in Europe, for sure. And asking for help from agents in there has not been very productive in my experience. But, it's all part of the adventure for DIY travelers.

Cheeses, what's with all the whining and crying negativity on this thread? Stay home if you can't handle new venues.

As for memories, I do remember some events from when I was 2 years old, like the day that my sister came home after birth. It must have been a hurricane hitting Norfolk, VA. I can still see my Mother coming down the hospital steps while me and my brother jumped around in the back seat with the wild wind and rain hitting the car windows. That was three score and ten years ago.

18 min for a train change wouldn't be enough anyway. You should leave Milan at 7am and arrive at Rome at 10am (either Trenitalia or Italotreno), but only if you like to get up in the middle of the night. Otherwise change at Verona as I suggested in my previous post.

To my way of thinking, the whole point of train travel is to relax and watch the scenery go by.
This just won't happen during a trip on a night train, where all you'll see is a lot of dark and will not be in comfortable beds.

Yes unless it is a daytime trip too long for young kids and many adults - then a night train's efficacy is good and on that route the scenery though nice is not awesome -no dramatic crossing of the Alps but tunnels.
