The UK on the cheap
Going to London next June/July and had a few questions:
1)Where can I find a decent road map of the island online?
2)Cheapest things to do in London and fun
3)Cheapest places to eat
I'm planning my travels right now, and have decided to stay in London for a week, drive to Oxford, Edinburgh and Hatfield, Hertfordshire (yes, I want to experience driving there) and spend a portion of the next week wrapping things up in London.
I am plannign on staying at St. Christopher's Village, because it's only around $25 a night. I'm hoping to do this whole trip under 1500$, and my airfare is $725.
Thanks.

I do like a corrspondent who uses the good old word "cheap", not the salesman's words "inexpensive", "moderate", or "low budget". I'm sorry I'm no help on maps, but I am copying you by e-mail notes on cheap and free food and pleasures in London.
You can cut cost if you use Apex or Superapex rail fares to and from Edinburgh. I think they're listed on http://www.thetrainline.com. If you combine that with use of sleepers each way (board your train at 2240, quit at 0800) you'll save travel time. Oxford is 90 minutes and eight pounds away from Londn by "the Oxford tube", a bus service. That leaves Hatfield -- which has a good rail service.
Please write if I can help further.

Chris, buy an Ordnance Survey Road Map Book with at least a 3 miles to the inch the Airport News Vendor - cheaper than buying it in the states but they do sell them in Barnes & Nobles. Try getting ahold of "Cheap Eats in London" by Sandra Gustafson. She has some pretty good, reasonable restaurants we tried and liked. Try this site for some "Cheap" advice in England. http://www.soon.org.uk/britain.htm

Hi,
I have used Kemwell Holiday Autos a few times and thought they were great. I even got a GREAT car upgrade once, same price (asked for an Escort, got a Rover 416si - not too shabby!)
The only thing I would caution you on, is that a budget of 800 bucks for what appears to be 2 weeks might be tough, given that you will be hiring a car and paying for gas, etc. on top of your stay in London.
I am not saying it is impossible but to be safe you might want to have some money in reserve. I love the UK and London is one of my favorite cities in the world, but it is not cheap. Do not be surprised if you spend 100 dollars a day without even trying.
have a great time! Go to Cornwall if you can - it is so so so pretty there.
