the Pyrenees

We rented a house near St Jean Pied de Port, 2 km from the Spanish border, last summer. I can't say enough good things about this beautiful region. The scenery is beautiful, with many lovely villages. Not far you have the sea, with the gorgeous towns of St Jean de Luz and Biarritz. We felt like we were in another country (we live in France) as the Basques are different and prefer their language and culture to French--even the Sat. AM cartoons were in Basque! Food and wine are both very good. The towns in Spain are interesting, though we did not get to go to St Sebastian (supposed to be great) as planned. Write back if you want more info.

We very much enjoyed the beautiful drive into the Pyrenees to the French village of St. Lary-Soulan, where we stayed in a hotel for a few days. Very nice scenery, and nice town. From there, we drove into Spain for day trips and enjoyed it a lot. The Pyrenees aren't as spectacular as some of the Alps, but they have a beauty and charm all their own; and the villages on both sides of the border are very interesting.
