The proper Basque pronunciation

Do you pronounce Basque like "mask" or like "mosque" ???? How do the real Basque people say it?

(American) English speakers say "bask", rhymes with ask or mask.

The pronunciation of this "a" syllable - in French - - is a subject of endless debate on this forum, and it depends on how you pronounce mask and mosque in the first place. See lots of debate on the recent thread http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34639319

There seems to be an agreement that the (first and second) syllable(s) in "Batman" does not exist in French.

"a" is normally pronounced as in "La Bamba". But others disagree, that in words like "Paris" or "garcon" - - saying that the sound is somewhere between Batman and La Bamba.

There are four syllables in Pais Vasco, and the the first and third are the same "a" sound as in La Bamba; the second syllable rhymes with fleece or geese, and the final syllable rhymes with doe, hoe or toe.

Best wishes,

Rex

They would say it in their native language like someone said, but if they are French Basque it rhymes with "mask".
