the Lido

Would anyone recommend staying here? What other areas are accessible to visit within one week?

If you mean the Lido island across from Venice, it's pretty much a beach resort type atmosphere, and the islands in the Venetian lagoon (as well as Venice) are a waterbus ride away. From the bus depot in Venice you can get buses to Stra and other mainland cities nearby. You can take a boat tour of the Brenta Canal that stops at several of the Palladian villas. From the Venice or Mestre train stations, you can get to cities in Venezia and Trento (as well as all over Italy).

Good evening, Jo
By alll means stay in a hotel in Venice
itself, the Lido does not have much
night life and off season, none. Hotels
can be found in all ranges in Venice.
see www.veniceinfo.it or www.italyhotels.it.
DO POZZI KETTE ALA LA FENICE
SATUIRNA AL SOLE MARCONI ACCADEMIA
we have used some of these in the past.
Vaporetti information around Venice and
the islands of Murano. Burano and Torcello can be found on www.actv.it/ingelse/preservizi.htm.
Use rail to places such as Verona, 1 hr
and Padua 1/2 hour out of Venice SL
Station.
Richard of La Grange Park, Il..
in the past.
Vaporetti information can be found

Just thought I'd toss in a little tidbit I learned about the Lido. There's a PBS series called "Great Streets" and the show a few weeks ago was on the Champs Elysees in Paris. The mentioned that the famous club, The Lido, on that street originally had a pool inside and was designed to look like Venice. Hence, they gave it the name Lido.

I stayed on Lido last year for New Year's - there are definite good and bad points.
Pro: we stayed at a really nice hotel (Hotel Boulevard)
We got to know the hotel managements, the people working in the local shops etc.
It was very quiet at night BUT
Con: You do have to go get on a boat to go to the main part of Venice, and that takes about 10 minutes (after you're on the boat)
If the weather is a little bit bad, the boat ride can turn one green with nausea (a dreadful memory)
Some of the hotels on Lido (Hotel Reiter specifically) are not very nice.
I just went back to Venice this year for New Years, and stayed near the Accademia. We were happier with that location - although I paid 35% more than I did the year before.
But it isn't a huge disadvantage, and it has some redeeming charms. (Hotel Boulevard gets my highest recommendations) Hope this helps a little!
