Wow, just...wow. What a phenomenal waste of all the time and effort put forth by so many people to assist in this wild goose chase. I think the clue should have been the OP's moniker - crazy...

What Janis said. And to anyone critical of the responses this morning, go and read all those threads, these people have spent hours upon hours trying to help. Slapping hand to head.

I'm not in the least annoyed, more entertained, began thinking long ago it might have been a "wild goose chase", someone even, as they say, yanking your chain. And a very good job of it. Just happy to see another perspective knowing full well I'd be punished for saying so.

janisj, you know I think you are the guru of all things UK and golf. I always agree with your opinion. And I do in this case, also. I guess because I didn't get sucked into the drama from the beginning, I "get" the angst of the OP.

I just wanted to provide (perhaps) an explanation for the flakiness of the OP. I do think there are people who have this ideal that an apartment will be great... then the reality sets in that it may require a little more work upfront doing research... and there is nothing 'perfect' out there (that hasn't been booked)... and maybe they are better off with a hotel. I think everyone just wishes that decision had been made rather than stringing posters along.

So, I agree with everyone's thoughts of "grrrrr... really?" but tried to be peacemaker. I should know that it never works!

surfmom: My comment wasn't at all aimed at you. I thought you were really trying to help this poor woman sort things out.

surfmom, was that the parisvacationapartments.com Mews apartment? We stay with them almost exclusively in Paris and loved the smaller Mews apartment in London.

Judy, that is the one. We have stayed with them in Paris before also (Palais Royal - 2 bedroom, not the big one). Alex and his crew really are fabulous.

I thought they only had one Mews apartment in London? If so, we may have stayed in the same one - we loved it!

OK - time to move on. This thread was a total train wreck, but is over now.

For those with the stamina though, crazy has opened another thread, and is now seeking advice on hotels in Milan.

Apparently she is heading there before flying to Prague - so all you Prague experts, have a rest, compose yourselves and be prepared - your turn is coming soon!

I guess I feel a little bit frustrated that I spent a fair bit of time trying to offer assistance that was requested, accepted, then discounted or disputed by crazy, before she came back on several threads, over several weeks asking the same questions.

Probably also a little bit disappointed with myself - wasted far too much time on something that was completely pointless and without redemption - I should have been more perceptive earlier, shut my laptop and gone to read my book (currently "The Paris Wife" a fictionalised "memoir" of Ernest Hemingway's first wife and their life together as Papa built his writing career in 1920's Paris - highly recommended).

Now - off to cook dinner.

Turkey breast fillets filled with Chicken & Cognac Pate, served with vegetables and a Red Wine reduction sauce. Served with a French Pinot Noir , on a pleasantly mild Saturday evening in southern Australia.

I feel better already!

Yum - enjoy that dinner bendigo!
I think we are being treated to slow roasted lamb with salad and a local southern Australian red here tonight as well and weather is mild and a little humid.

I really appreciated all your comments and will store them for future reference so not entirely wasted.
Eat well!

Bendigo, I sympathise and agree. If I counted correctly Crazy has started 28 threads in relation to this trip and taken very little, if any, advice. I think she booked a hotel in Prague that I recommended, I'm not sure.

I'm not recommending anything else for her. I can also imagine the fallout if she doesn't like our recommendations when she does get to Europe.

The book sounds interesting. I'll see if I can find it on kudo.

Bendigo - I understand the frustration, however all of us love Fodors and love giving advice.
I am not frustrated with crazy or upset that she has not taken anyone's advice.
It is her choice.
I gave her options too, but I love lurking on Fodors and was happy to do so.
I could not care less whether she took it or not.

I think everyone got just a tad too emotional. Does she travel and organise things like us - definately not. but everyone is different.

I actually believe everyone secretly loved the drama of it all.

We are also from the utter end of the earth - Ile St Louis is a sublime location!

Anywhere in the central part of Paris is amazing - the history and the sense that you are on ground that has witnessed incredible events, has borne the footsteps of almost everyone who has been anyone in the Western world for the last thousand years is extraordinary.

It was my first visit last year - I'm almost fifty, and in a direct line I'm the first to get back to Europe since we left / were chased out / shipped out of England in the 1850s. the whole place is amazing - if you have not read much French history, try to get some overview of at least the last 300 years - or more if you have time. Understanding, or at least appreciating, the history and the significant places - for me at least - was a really important part of appreciating what I was seeing and experiencing.

Climbing the tower at Notre Dame - which started 850th Anniversary celebrations when we were there in early December - was incredible - the steps so worn from the miillions of footsteps of those who'd been there before - and just a few steps from where you'll be!

Our apartment in the Marais was nice - but not perfect - but we were in Paris, and for me, doing some research, making some decisions and getting there was what's important - if we spend too much time seeking perfection we'd never get around to doing anything, and that would be an incredible tragedy.

My kids - 20, 18 & 16 - at least a few times a week will hear or see something that reminds them of our trip and / or becomes a discussion point. Their world view has expanded spectacularly; I am sure that their ability to function in a cross-cultural environment is enhanced and I think that their resilience and independence has been improved.

Have a great trip - we will be saving to get back to Paris - in the meantime I am entering every competition possible to egt someone else to pay to get me back faster!

Oh guys . . I know you invested a lot of time and I know that this thread will be sooo helpful with people who can make the decision and go with it.

I did have an ideal of an apartment . . here in Australia when we have stayed in apartments they have been like hotels and we haven't paid till we leave etc.

I also think with the change in plans and with my mother being with me and not my husband for those first few days I just got too nervous with someone always saying something was wrong with my selection etc that we decided a hotel with a concierge would be better for us.

For those who have been on the journey from the beginning ...you have helped me sooo much and I have taken on your advice...originally I was planning on staying in places for 3 days at a time and driving from London to Frankfurt . .now we are staying a week at a time and have really been guided through to where these places are.

Cathie I did book that place in Prague StQ I did book in Sarlat someone else recommended Carcassonne and El born for Barcelona . .both booked . .. Berlin recommendation Booked . . .Varenna location BOOKED . .Uzes . . BOOKED . . .Frankfurt Booked . . Lucca ...BOOKED . .ferry from Barcelona to Genoa .. Booked . ..London hotels are looking like either regency, millennium or chesterfield . .I think and yes the Paris one we still are yet to decide . . .

So although this part of the trip seems like a huge drama . . it really is just this and london that I have left and then it is all done! Besides the hire cars and train trips.

I am sorry if some of you feel I have wasted your time. I have to do what feels right and with my mother I feel we need to be in a hotel suite rather then apartment.

As always THANK YOU . .I know through searching on the forum that people will find this thread useful . . .I am not going to waste your times with my hotel choices as someone has already created a great thread about hotels of recommendations and I m using that.

Oh and I chose my milan hotel

When is this trip? I lost track a while back. You do know that you will get better prices for the trains if you book ahead? See seat61.com for details.
