Thanks so much for the feedback! It looks like the trains from York to Darlington are frequent and affordable. Going with Darlington Taxi, from the station, instead of a bespoke tour will save us about 500GBP.

Husband is not up to walking more than 10-15 minutes at a time, so this hits all kinds of goals in terms of affordability and duration.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I'd rather spend a couple of days in Swaledale walking the moors than York.
I'd rather spend time like that, too, but spouse really, really, REALLY wants to do York. Our accommodations are already booked. He has some limitations, had already given up on doing some things (like "the splash") and this will likely be his last trip anywhere. Working within that framework, and a certain "frugality," then layering it onto what I want to experience has certainly been an adventure.

But we'll get there - thanks in part to your help.

For a meal, with factors of affordability and "TV filming location," would you prefer The Punch Bowl over the Red Lion?

For a "nice" meal the Punch Bowl. But if you just want food and the Red Lion is convenient then go for that. No need to book. Just decide on the day.

What time of the year are you going? The best is early June as the dales are awash with wildflowers. And sheep. And on the moors the call of the lapwing https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wi...rd-a-z/lapwing

Hiring a taxi for the day wouldn't cost anywhere near £500 - that sounds like a tour for a group in a 12 or 16 passenger mini bus.

I wrote that it will SAVE us about 500GBR. You're right that it won't cost anywhere near that amount.

OK -- I'm confused -- if it doesn't cost £500+ how could you save £500 by not taking it.

A bespoke tour would be 600. A taxi and train would be 100. That's how we would save 500 by choosing the taxi/train over the tour. ;-)
