The Freemasons Arms in Hampstead

During our week in London, we are staying with friends who are living in Hampstead for a few months.

I don't think they know the imediate area that well, yet. Do you have recomdeations for things to do or place to eat with in an easy walk of the The Freemasons Arms?

Is the Arms Good?

Thank you!

Keith

The Freemasons Arms is a bit meh. It wants to be a restaurant - which is something no pub should ever do.

There's nothing wrong with it per se, it's just dull. There are, happily many very good pubs nearby though. The Holly Bush and the Flask are excellent. If you want to eat then try the Magdala (and look for the bullet holes on the wall outside - it's where Ruth Ellis (the last woman to be hanged in Britain) gunned down her boyfriend).

The King William IV is a gay bar - so if that's not your cuppa - avoid.

Hampstead itself is a nice place - if you like yummy mummies and arty types. You have the truly wonderful Kenwood House in the Heath (and the Heath after dark is a very busy gay cruising area - and can be quite dangerous (people preying on the gays). There's also Keats and Freud's houses which are museums. Other than than there's not a lot. Yo can however go skinny dipping in the ponds (it's allowed).

But you are a hop and a skip from central London (24 Bus will take you there). Camden is just down the Rd (same bus) as is Primrose Hill which is stiff with places to eat.

There's a Theatre - the New End which can have some good stuff on.

Thank you so much!

Does Bus 24 make more sense than the Tube?

I liked Hampstead, via a couple of London Walks that I did there. Holly Bush and Ye Olde White Bear were nice pubs. Quite a few nice old buildings (oldest row of Georgian era houses), check out the church where Constable is buried. Nice around there.

A walk, during day, of Hampstead Heath would be nice.

It's got a bit of a village feel to it, so as a visitor to the busy areas of London, this was a nice break.

There's not much in it. You pays your money,....you takes your choice. The bus goes down Hampstead Road, to Camden Town, down Tottenham Court Rd and then to Trafalgar Square.
