Bonjour, Mimi. According to Oanda, 50FF = 7.62 euros = $6.70. I would round it off to $7.00 (or a bit more if you want to be generous.) This assumes that the person you are buying from is American and will not need to change your $ to some other currency.

mpprh, I'm buying a french 50franc because it has the picture of "the little Prince" and the author.a young man who collects anything that features the little prince has a birthday soon.

Pay whatever the two of your agree on - a 50 franc note is now totally worthless. Francs were replaced by Euros and since Feb.17 they are no longer legal tender.

Are they really "totally" worthless? I know that the European currencies that were replaced by the Euro are no longer legal tender, but I had understood they could be exchanged at banks for some time yet.

You are right, Dick. The owner of that note could take it to a French National Bank and exchange it for Euros. He'd get somewhere in the range of 7 to 8 Euros for it, sorry I've lost track of the exact amount. If it means something to you, $7.00 is a fair price to pay him for it as a "momento".

I believe at least through June the exchange is 6.56 FF=1 euro and as Patrick mentions, only at French National Banks.
