The widest? Did you happen to see that film, "Super-Size Me"? Wow! I think the USA can lay claim to having the greatet number of wide-ones, but I understand we are exporting excess avoid du pois with our fast-food eateries and coach-potato lifestyle. Achieving world records with a fork.

Hmm . . . I thought this was very interesting. I wondered if it's because of better nutrition. But I looked up some countries in Europe on the CIA factbook (the first 15 countries I could think of) and the Netherlands leads the bottom half of the pack in longevity. But, it could be that childhood nutrition (when it counts towards height) is greater in the Netherlands, and elder care (when it counts toward longevity) is not.
Or, by coincidence, they've kept all their tall genes in the country. I don't know how racial mixing comes into play. I'm pure German and quite short. My husband is totally mixed up and very tall. Who knows.
All I know is, it's great to be short when you travel a lot by plane.
Edited to add:
By the way, if anyone is interested, the countries with the highest longevity (in order) are: Switzerland, Sweden, Iceland, Italy, France, Spain, Norway, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, U.K., Finland, Denmark, Portugal.

The seemingly extremely high smoking and drinking rate in Holland - only by my observations and have no stats to back up - may affect longevity. Especially since they seem to smoke that Shag stuff which may be even more dangerous than rolled cigarettes - not sure about this but a lot of folks seem to smoke

Pal - probably the only way to measure longevity is to tie it to "life expectancy at birth". This does away with accidental death.
Having said that, you do realize that although the Netherlands is 30th (78.96 years), the US is 47th (77.85 years)?
Does that mean, using your reasoning, that they smoke and drink more in the States?

No - i was correlating the statement that someone said about great nutrition being the cause for spurt in growth and then they said but the NL life expenctancy was not the highest though they were the tallest.
If they didn't smoke like chimneys then maybe these dyke jumpers will also live longer than other nations whose smoking rate is less. Again i don't know the stats and this could all be a bunch of... but it seems to the casual tourist observor they smoke more and drink more though this could be wrong.
As for US the life expectancy rate i would bet for folks with good medical insurance and care and preventive medicine would rival any in the world but we are dragged down by many who have no insurance or access to health care and also many more poorer folks than European nations. And probably obeseity also plays a factor.

I think that the answer to the tallest question depends in part on the age group you are interested in. When I walk the Grote Houtstraat in Haarlem I am amazed at the height of the young ladies these days. The girls have sprouted since my life there in the 70s.
Last year I visited the Baltics for the first time. Riga and Vilnius have not only really tall but really beautiful women.
Denmark has always had tall people, and big ones at that. Those vikings are something else. I'm only 6' but I remember being in a dance bar in Copenhagen years ago where all I could see was armpits.

PalenQ, er, uh, I think you meant to say "dike jumpers" A "dyke jumper" is something quite different.
And how someone managed to work in an erroneous and unproven theory about US exit polls in 2004 is a monument to the imagination.

yes you're right - i supposed in Amsterdamned however there are also dyke jumpers!
Near where i live we have probably the largest Dutch ethnic population in the U.S. or one of the biggest and that's where that word dike jumper comes from - in basketball the Dutch area teams, especially those who go to the many 'Christian' schools are quite good and usually fairly tall.
Ironically the Dutch here are often fundamental Christians - quite unlike the real Dutch in Holland who are quite the opposite. I guess they got rid of all the holly-rollers and sent them over here - a college friend of mine was from our Dutch area and said, back in the 60s, that the local minister got in hot water for mowing his lawn on a Sunday!
Anyway these Dutch are truly dike jumpers and may be as tall as the Dutch Dutch i think so ethnicity may be more important than country you live in.

Times Square New York is not America!
I am Dutch, 30 year old and I am small for a Dutch from my age , I am 6 feet one. I come from Friesland (a farmer's area North in the Netherlands) were men are 6 feet 4 on average (woman 5- 11) . I have 3 friends who are taller then 7 feet. Now I live in Amsterdam in a popular trendy area for the Dutch but unknown to mass tourists. Amsterdam is a tourist city : it has the most tourists per inhabitant in Europe. So if you come to Amsterdam you will see other tourists, coffeeshops, red lights, a sex show in the banana bar, 500 year old canals and maybe a museum or the Anna Frank House. So you are seeing 99% other tourist who are dwarfs compared to the Dutch. There are 17 million people living in the Netherlands, how many Dutch would you see in the touristic centre of Europe? Most visitors in the Red Light District come from Uk. Most people smoking cannabis in the coffeeshops are Americans. My point: As a tourist you won't see many Dutch. If you do want to see the Dutch, go to the Albet Cuyp Street Market (The largest daily street market in Europe) or to the dairy department in the Albert Heijn, the biggest Dutch Supermarket. There you will see very tall Dutch people, at least I do. Also look at the people on a non-rental black bike. They are Dutch and tall!

Jaser, this is an old thread, but interesting to me. I came from Dutch mixed with American Indian on one side and black Irish on the other. Some of my mostly Dutch relatives are like giants. One girl cousin is well over 6 feet and no fat. Her Mom and siblings are the same.
Though I had been to the Netherlands many years ago, I didn't really notice, but a couple of years ago, I went to Brugges. I saw pretty, young school girls with long blond braids, wearing school uniforms. They were so huge (not fat at all - just giant sized), I was amazed. My cousins look exactly like those girls. DH rarely notices or comments on people, but after we passed, I looked at him and said, "What do you think?" He said, "If the horses drop over, those girls could pull the beer wagons." He didn't mean it unkindly - we were in awe.
I look exactly like the Dutch side of my family, but got the small size of the Irish side. I am a miniature of my cousins - very funny to see us together.
