The Calendar Girls

I recently saw The Calendar Girls. Here's my question. I will be going to London for 1 week and would like to fit in a day trip to where the Calendar Girls are I think it is in North Yorkshire Dales. Is that feasible to go just for the day?

Such a trip is possible but you would spend a lot of time on the train back and forth to York. Please note that to get around the dales you really need a car. If you are spending a week in London, I would concentrate on seeing the sites there and do a different trip to see Yorkshire another time.

By the way, I actually purchased that calendar when it came out. I brought it back from a trip. The photos were very, shall we say, decorous. All of them wore pearls. I haven't seen the film yet though. My film viewing--and everything else--has considerably slowed down due to bad weather and a broken bone in my ankle. I hope to see the film if I can hobble on over before it goes.

I agree with Lauren that it would be a long, challenging day. What I think you would have to do is take a train to Leeds, changing there for Skipton. Then hire a taxi for the day in Skipton, who can drive you to the filming locations (Kettlewell is the only one I know of) and to Rylestone, where the real calendar girls are from.

We really enjoyed our stay in Kettlewell a few years ago. Besides the fact that it would be nearly impossible to do as a day trip, one day would not do this area justice, you would need at least two. Next time consider staying at this charming B&B http://www.little-beck.co.uk/

Thank you to everyone for your help. I think you're right, it would be too much for just a day trip

whoa!...

how 'bout a "girls of fodors" calendar for 2005? i've always wanted to see if "thingorgious" was really all that and "thonglori" certainly seems to have potential.

whatta ya say, girls?

I saw the movie & subsequently saw the calendar. The "real" women were actually better looking in many cases than the actresses! I was amazed thta they recreated the original photos so well.

Out of curiousity, Madison, why did you want to go there? Were you taken with the scenery, the women?

McLaurie - I think it was a combination of the scenery and the women. I thought what they did was gutsy and admirable. I remember seeing them on the Jay Leno Show a few years ago. I say good for them.

When the movie the Bridges of Madison County came out I made a trip to Winterset, Iowa and visited all the bridges. In fact I went there on 5 different occasions because I found their lifestyle, etc. so different from mine. I made a few wonderful friends as well. If anyone is familiar with the Roseman Bridge in the movie while I was visiting it I saw a kitten in the cornfields and brought it home to L.A. and his name is, what else...Madison

I think a Fodorite calendar would be a good idea with tastefully nude pictures of us in different parts of the world.

Who first?

I'll volunteer to be strategically embracing a gargoyle on top of Notre Dame. It will have to be one of the warm months, though.

Since October and July are taken, I will hold a giant nutcracker in Bavaria in December.
I do like your gargoyle idea, Marilyn!

Since I was born in August - I'll be Ms. August standing in the pond in the Tuileries Gardens with the little sail boats stragically placed and hope the little kids don't come up to me with their sticks trying to take my sail boats.

Well, I could use two mounds of pistacio gelato to hide behind while sitting in Piazza Navona with my hot pink pashmina flowing in the breeze, ok?
I can take a test picture in March, oh nevermind, it will be too cold, but maybe better than in August when they will melt......
