Thanksgiving in Europe?

We're renting a mountain cottage in the Allgäu (Bavarian Alps near Switzerland) over Thanksgiving weekend with some other expat friends living in/near Munich. Although we'll celebrate on Friday instead of Thursday, we're still looking forward to a traditional American feast in the mountains.

How many of you are taking advantage of the long weekend to travel from the US to Europe & where are you going?

My dear riffic,

>How many of you are taking advantage of the long weekend to travel from the US to Europe ....<

About 2% of the population.

(Although I make a point of not getting political; this is the sort of thing that makes a person vote Democratic.)

My dear Ira

I can't afford to lose any more dog food at customs, so I decided to stay here!

Hi riffic,
>I can't afford to lose any more dog food at customs, so I decided to stay here!<

An excellent idea.

My LW has brought home a number of "Turkey in Gravy" cans of cat food, which I am considering making the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving dinner -if the cats will let me.

PerhapsI can tempt them with foie gras.

So, since you already rented the mountain cottage, are you allowing someone else to use it?

Even though I live on the US east coast, Europe is too far for me to want to go on a long weekend, especially with the time change--as well as it being the end of November so not that appealing to me.

I'm going to Cozumel, Mexico and looking forward to margaritas and enchiladas and some snorkeling.

I'm using the last of this year's vacation days to go to Italy this Thanksgiving. I haven't been in Rome at that time of year so I am looking forward to it. I think I will have some pumpkin ravioli on Thanksgiving.

Ira, you say about 2% of people in the USA go to Europe over Thanksgiving. That would be 1 in 50 persons, which would be a little over 5.5 million. Doesn't sound right, does it?

Riffic,
We're going to be in Paris the weekend before Thanksgiving, then back home for the actual holiday.

One recommendation for your traditional dinner: Take your own cranberry sauce- it's hard to find in other parts of the world.

Like SeaUrchin, I'm using my last precious vacation days to have 8 nights split between Strasbourg and Paris over Thanksgiving week. Since reading a post here a number of years ago about Strasbourg's Christmas market, I've really wanted to visit and the Swiss roundtrip flight for US$320 made up my mind.

In my office of 50, five of us (plus respective friends and family) are going to be in France - all uncoordinated plans, too.

There are a good number of American Expats all over europe. If you stumble upon a football game in Hyde Park or elsewhere join in! (I'll be Lucy, you can be Charlie Brown).

This sounds like such a lovely idea. SeaURchin, is it still warm in Rome at that time of year? I think an Italian Thanksgiving would be so great..sigh.
Someone posted a question about Celebrating Thanksgiving in Paris, I think they said.
Of course, we know that Paris does not celebrate Thanksgiving but it sure would be fun to go and try celebrating it French style~
Marcy, you will be spending more time in Paris this year than in the US..lucky lucky

Scarlett,
Well, not quite more time in Paris than in the US, but that's something to shoot for!

I am seriously hooked on Paris right now, and just can't get enough of it. If I could get a job there......

Are you going to get to go in March?

Scarlett, I have no idea, but I am watching weather.com for trends. It might be fun to bundle up in warm clothes and experience it that way this time.

I do love pumpkin ravioli, have you ever tried it? Especially with a buttery sage sauce, yum.

Riffic, I tell you you HAVE to start getting your dog food at Booth Feeds..then you can more easily afford to go on trips <G>.

I was looking at fares just this week...and thinking about going over to either London or A-Dam on Tuesday night before the holiday..but the Bavarian Alps would be a lot more fun I suppose.

Marcy, March is in the air, we are unsure of where we will be as well as the boy. But I still have great hopes of making it there next year.
SeaUrchin, I would think that a wintery Rome is quite as beautiful as the typical summer Rome, if not more so.
I have had pumpkin ravioli in NYC but would rather have it in Rome

I will be flying the day after Thanksgiving from Europe to Chicago for six days. I LOVE Chicago, am staying at two nice hotels (Sofitel and Swissotel) and the company I work for pays for business class airfare, so I am looking forward to this trip And I hope it snows in Chicago!
