TGV or drive from Avignon to Nice?

My wife and I are traveling to Paris, then to Provence, then to Nice, then home in September. We will be taking the TGV from Paris to Avignon, then renting a car and hopefully basing ourselves in St. Remy. Should we return the car in Avignon and take the TGV to Nice, or keep the car and drive to Nice? (We think we may want a car for a few days in Nice, but if TGV is a better way to get there, we could return our car in Avignon and rent another car after we arrive in Nice. We won't want a car the whole time we're in Nice -- just a few days to drive up into the hill towns, etc.) Any thoughts out there re travel time, sites along the way, etc?

The drive from Avignon to Nice on the autoroute was a breeze. As I recall, it took only a couple of hours. Driving in the city of Nice was difficult and we turned in our rental car early. We were in Nice for two nights on business and hadn't planned to explore outside the city.

The drive is easy. Also, some of the more interesting sights around Nice are the many hilltop villages. That requires a car.

I would also suggest driving... you can actually get there faster than on the train. The TGV doesn't go as far as Nice yet (and won't until about 2015).

PB

If you decide not to drive to Nice, you can visit several of the hill towns by bus. We recently took the bus to Vence & then on to St. Paul de Vence. They run regularly & we had no problem...
