I am open to suggestions or info (like how long it REALLY takes to drive thru the Pyrenees or any extra info about favorite places to stay. We are driving once we leave Barcelona and we are open to pensiones and guest houses, and trying to keep under 100 Euros a night if possible. Thanks!

When we drove from Barcelona back to the Dordogne, we went up the Spanish side of the Pyrenees to Puigcerdà and Bourg-Madame staying off the limited access highway and using the old road over the pass. From there we drove down to Prades and then over the col de Jau to Quillan, all in one day. But instead one could go toward the coast. The area between Bourg-Madame and Prades has sites of interest: Mont-Louis is a Vauban fortification, Saint-Martin de Canigou and Saint Michel de Cuxa are old monasteries, Villefrance de Conflent is a plus beau village.

For your stay in Carcassonne I highly recommend staying at Chateau De Palaja in the village of Palaja which is a 5 minute drive to La Cite. We stayed there in July. You can read rave reviews on Tripadvisor (specialty lodging) and booking.com. We booked thru booking.com.It meets your price requirements.

Check out if you can still find a room at Banys Orientals in El Born/Gothic quarter in Barcelona. Something out of the ordinary in the best location, close to "everything" and great value for 100€: http://www.hotelbanysorientals.com/en/index.html
