Hi Dreamer2
It sounds like you've got some great suggestions already. My only addition would be to check out the Time Out website for London before you go/when you're here:
http://www.timeout.com/london/
It covers things to do by themes and includes some of the less permanent attractions and exhibitions like the current 'History of Formula One' exhibition at the Design Museum that I'm being dragged to by my thinks-he's-15 boyf!

Getting hold of a copy of Time Out - the magazine - is a good idea. It will have a listing of the various things that are on on any given day. It might be worth having a look at the listings for HMV megastore etc as bands often do PA during the daytime.
Of course if you are feeling viscious you could send him to the Gilbert Collection which would surely be the worst place on earth for a teenage boy (and frankly this hairy-arsed man was bored beyond endurance in it)

At age 14, my son spent half a day on his own at London's top notch Science Museum. Lots of interactive exhibits there, if that is of interest.

Of course if you are staying in the City (which may be what you mean by "fin/bus district" the Tower of London is probably closer. From that area, he could add a tour of the HMS Belfast (retired naval ship) and/or the Tower Bridge Experience...
If he is not familiar with the Tube or bus system, it might be safer to let him take a taxi to/from his sightseeing.
