Tarifa to Tangier - day trip
My wife and I are planning a February trip to Southern Spain and Portugal. We are interested in taking a day-trip from Tarifa to Tangier. We have been looking at various options such as package tours or hiring a guide once we get to Tangier. I also read that it is possible to arrange a guide through the hotel in Tarifa. Before committing to anything, I thought I'd query the members in the forum to see if there is any recent experience with day-trips to Tangiers and if any of you have used the services of individual guides or the package tours and how that worked out.
Thanks.
Thanks.

We did a visit several years ago, the entire journey was a day long tour event conducted by one of the many firms who do such things ...everything included, meet at the dock to catch the ferry early and deposited back at the same place late afternoon. They did everything as we didn't want to mess with logistics and finding our way through the city ourselves. It had good and bad points...pretty much boilerplate, bus ride around town, walking tours around the old town, stop for a traditional lunch, short, obligatory sales sessions with spice and carpet vendors....if you want to make a quick visit to put on your bucket list and say you saw it, the day tour is probably fine. If you are really a scholar and want to get down into the weeds and avoid cheesy sales pitches, maybe a private guide would be an option. We felt we accomplished our goal which was to get there and back with a minimum of hassle, see the high points, eat some food and head back in a single day without getting lost or breaking the bank. There are dozens of vendors.

I suppose you know that Tanger in not the most interesting place to visit in Morocco.
If you pass through Algeciras anyway, I would suggest a catamaran ride to Ceuta, followed by a shared taxi ride to Tetouan, a really Moroccon gem.
There are also direct flights from Sevilla and Malaga to Casablanca and from Malaga to Casablanca and Fez (Fares stgart around 50 EUR/OW):
That would allow you a 2-3 days trip to the splendid imperial cities of Rabar, Meknes and Fez.

Thanks for the quick replies. Due to time constraints, we have only one day for a trip to Tanger and I think for this trip the 'boilerplate' tour works best for our situation. I wonder if it's best to get the tour arranged before we leave or just pick one up once we are in Tarifa?

I’ve also heard really good things about Assilah, in case you want something quieter than Tangier. It's a small, relaxed coastal town about 45 minutes from Tangier, with a very clean medina, beautiful murals, and a calmer vibe compared to Tangier. Some travelers even prefer it for a more peaceful introduction to Morocco. It might be worth considering.
As for arranging the tour, from what I’ve seen and experienced, it’s usually better to book it before you get to Tarifa. It will just make the day run smoother for you, especially with the small timing and having a guide waiting for you on arrival. It saves you from last-minute stress and lets you enjoy the trip without rushing to sort things out once you’re there.

Don’t do it. You’ll be sorry. Unless you like grifter after grifter trying to sell you cheap carpets, rugs, hats, scarves, and assorted other goods made in China. Very pushy and very rude to women. I almost got in 3 fights because of their advances toward my wife. Morocco is beautiful. Tangiers is akin to California to Tijuana, Mexico.

Maybe that is the point of a day trip to Tangier for some people. But if the point is to get a sense of what Morocco is like, then I think it would be quite misleading.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions of tour companies/vendors. We are aware of the commercialization and aggressive manner of marketing, I thought that being in a group or private tour would give us some shelter from it.
