Tangier/Morrocco

I am considering including a one day trip in April to Morrocco because I plan to briefly be in Gibralter. If you have been there, do you think it is a safe enough place to visit with couple kids etc (this is a question from a naive tourist... please don't make it a political commentary thread!)? Any pointers vis-a-vis what to see, tours, worth it or not, are most welcome. Thanks!

Well, since no one with personal experience has answered your question yet, I will give it a try.

We are planning a trip to Barcelona and Morocco for March, so I have done a fair amount of research on this. Most people say that Tangiers is not a good representation of Morocco and not worth a daytrip from Spain. One poster described it as Morocco's Tijuana. The common wisdom is unless you have time to get to Marakkech or Fez not to bother.

I origionally started planning a trip to Morocco but my husband did not want to go. I spent some time on the Africa board and got lots of good information from Fodorites who have been to Morocco and loved it. However, I got the same kind of feedback about Tangiers from them and from guidebooks. You might try posting on the Afica board.

Of course it's safe. It's just a dump and not worth the trouble IMHO of getting there and back. I'm sure I'm one of those whose posts indicated it was like Tijuana and not at all representative of Morocco, which is true. Morocco is an absolutely splendid country, but Tangier? Peeeeuuuuwwww...

Anyone remember the Alec Guiness movie Captain's paradise? I believe that he was a captain who ferried between Gibraltar and Tangiers.

Interesting feedback. Yes, I think I am better off with another day in Sevilla!

I will join in and say Tangier isn't very impressive and I would skip it; on the other hand I found Rabat and Fez worth every bit of the effort it took to get there and would highly recommend either. If you could strech to overnighting in either of those cities I would say go for it. I felt like I had wandered onto a page of a National Geographic (Fex is a bit more impressive but Rabat won't disappoint).
In the movie "Patton" Morocco was characterized, if I remember correctly, as a mix of Hollywood and the Bible. At its best that is a pretty good description of Morocco.
