Rex,

Thanks for tallying. (I'd enjoy
coming across another Fodorite
far from home, and I'd be more
than willing to pay for a new pin.)

Gerry K

Jon,

Your question seems fair - - and it's not about holding "them" (or anyone - - and "they" have had their jobs terminated by Fodors now) accountable.

It's about trying to understand what DID happen with a project that I feel like I personally DID have a hand in (see URL listed below) - - and so many people have expressed the following opinions/questions:

Why only two days opportunity to register for the pin? Are they really all gone?

Why was the shipping so badly handled (not why was a bad decision made, but what was the scope of postal machinery jamming that caused a lot of people to receive an empty envelope)?

Were some people black-balled? Or could there some other explanation to the numbers of people who received nothing (or was this also postal machinery jamming and TOTALLY destroying envelopes)?

Last of all, it gives some additional insight into the question - - how many people are their in "our community"? Were there really 500 respondents in that two day time window? Does it make sense that there are that many "lurkers?" The earlier thread, titled simply "YESSS!!!" didn't convey sufficient information to attract posts on this subject (if you were inclined to do so). Who ARE these people that want to be identified by wearing a pin - - but never post ANYthing here? I just cannot believe that "we" are 500 people (or 400, or even close!) - - though the numbers are never gonna be really known, because there is (we hope) a never-ending stream of new people discovering this forum, returning for a few days or a few weeks or longer, and then moving on - - satisfied with the info they received, or in other cases, perhaps - - unimpressed.

Here, by the way is the URL info I mentioned above:

From another thread:

====================================

Message: Here you go, Kathy - -

"my" Fodor's logo ribbon pin - - the "original"...

http://www.geocities.com/rexbickers/LogoPin.htm

"their" pin...

http://www.geocities.com/rexbickers/FodorsPin.htm

and both pins, side by side...

http://www.geocities.com/rexbickers/BothPins.htm

=====================================

Oh, and in the next post - - so as to not get lost in this much more (too?) lengthy one - - the updated numbers.
Here are updated numbers:

Have received a pin - - 74
Received an empty envelope - - 24
Have not received anything - - 20

I won't post the names here anymore, but I will post an updated list (with the e-mail addresses obscured) from time to time - - and perhaps the pictures mentioned above - - on

http://communities.msn.com/RexBickers/messageboard.msnw
Perhaps my question was unclear. I'm wondering where Fodor's claimed there would be 500 pins shipped.
I haven't read anything "officially" stating that specific quantity.
Thanks,
j.

Ordered first day -- obviously it didn't get here before we left for Italy 5/9 so I expected to find it in the bushell of mail our son collected for us. Nope. Nothing received.

Our pin arrived earlier this week. The envelope was torn, but the pin was in a small plastic bag.

I ordered two pins the first day, one for myself and one for a friend. My friend received his, but I have received nothing. We're both in Atlanta.

Jon,

Well, this is just a coincidence that Sally just posted, but the number 500 may have been one of those things that got repeated often enough that rumor seemed to take on the dimensions of "fact".

I was thinking that I heard it earlier than this, but this appears to be the oldest reference to the number 500. Others repeated it; I think I became a "fourth generation" rumor-monger.

===============================

Author: s.fowler ([email protected])
Date: 5/23/2001, 2:40 pm ET

Message: The rumor I heard and I REPEAT a RUMOR -- was that there were 500. Also the "pulling" might have been related to Terri W.'s departure

===================================

from the thread "Got your Fodorite Pin yet?"

http://www.fodors.com/forums/crossro...messagesframe&

Like I said, I feel like I heard the number BEFORE I left for Italy on May 3. But I cannot track down where.

Sally, where did you hear it?
A mangled & puntured envelope, which the Post Office placed in another envelope along with their apologies --- yes, pin did arrive earlier this week in Tuesday's mail.
I have received nothing as yet, and ordered on the first day. However, it would have to come all the way to Australia and that might be a problem.
Still hoping anyway.

I heard the 500 number via email from a fodorite who had heard that number from another fodorite. Both of these are fodorites whose judgment I trust -- but we also may have an urban legend here too. That's all I know -- and please note that I treated it as a rumor, not as a fact.

Now I hope we can put this silly thread to rest.

Why is this suddenly a "silly thread" that needs to be "put to rest"?

You've posted on it twice, as well as the other threads of similar natures.

You make me laugh when you allow your queen bee attitude to make attempts to govern the material on this board.

I'm now waiting for you to do one of your token "email to Fodors requesting they remove this thread from the forum."
